Rayah Rose's Diary

Day 60

November 13, 2008

Dear Diary, I brought the Sgt's letter with me to my service club meeting last night. They all agreed that it was very cool that someone wrote us back. Now with Thanksgiving right around the corner, we're busy planning our canned food drive to feed needy families. I think we have it pretty much worked out. We're going to put big boxes in the schools and grocery stores, anywhere we can to start collecting. The real work isn't until we have to pick up all the collected food and deliver it to the shelter.

Day 59

November 11, 2008

Dear Diary, Remember those freedom cards my service club mailed do the troops in Iraq? Well, today I got a letter in the mail from one of them. It's actually from one of the sgts. He wanted to say thank you to me and all my other friends who helped send so many cards to his troops. I thought that was very neat that he wrote us back, and now we know for sure that our cards made it to them!

Day 58

November 7, 2008

Dear Diary, Tomorrow Mom's friend Cherie and her daughter Gabrielle are coming over. That's the girl that drives me crazy because she's so bossy and just not nice a lot of times. It's not like I wanted to invite Gabrielle over to play with. I just get stuck playing with her while Mom and Cherie talk and drink their coffee. Hopefully the day will go fast!

Day 57

November 2, 2008

Dear Diary, I loved the haunted forest show we went to! And yes, even Sierra came, which made me happy. It was spooky, but I don't think I'd say it was scarey. Maybe for little kids it would be, but not me. I thought I'd miss the trick or treating, but I really didn't. This was way more cool!

Day 56

October 29, 2008

Dear Diary, For Halloween this year we're going to some haunted forest. I guess the forest isn't really haunted, but there is supposed to be some really cool show with special effects and music. I think it will be fun to do something different for Halloween. I hope Sierra will come too.

Day 55

October 27, 2008

Dear diary, Mom and Dad said no about sleeping in the treehouse. They said no until next summer because it's too cold, and my treehouse doesn't have a heater like our cabins did when we went camping. I wish I had thought of my treehouse idea during the summer! Next summer is so far away. Well, at least I tried.

Day 54

October 23, 2008

Dear Diary, I had so much fun camping, that I came up with an idea! I'm going to ask Mom and Dad if I can sleep in my treehouse this weekend. I don't know why I never thought of it before, but it seems like a good idea. It's right by the house, so it's not like I'm that far away. It would kind of be like camping. Maybe Caroline could even come over too!

Day 53

October 20, 2008

Dear Diary, I got an email today from Allison! She said she likes her new house and her school is okay, but that she really misses Vermont. Allison said it's hard to make new friends when the school year started so long ago, and the other kids already know each other. Maybe she should join a club or something to meet friends. That's why I first joined the service club, to meet other kids.

Day 52

October 15, 2008

Dear Diary, Mom and Dad were asking me what was my favorite thing abot the camping trip. I'm not sure I can pick one thing! We made smores, which was fun. I kept accidentally dropping my marshmallow into the fire, which made everyone laugh! We rode the horses around the park on trails which was neat. I've only been horseback riding once before, so it's kind of new to me. It really didn't seem that hard once I got the hang of it. I can't wait for our next camping trip!

Day 51

October 14, 2008

Dear Diary, Camping was awesome! We went hiking and horseback riding. We had to cook our own dinner over the campfire. Nothing fancy, just hotdogs and beans and stuff like that. Caroline and I did everything together. Will write more about it tomorrow, I have to get ready for dinner now.

Day 50

October 10, 2008

Dear Diary, Today's the day! My sister Sierra brought me home a new sweatshirt to wear this weekend that has her college name on the front, I love it! We leave right after school. The campground isn't too far away, only a couple of hours. See you Monday night!

Day 49

October 8, 2008

Dear Diary, I am so, so, so excited to leave Friday! My friend Caroline and I are going to be in the same cabin with a couple other girls. It's too cold this time of year to sleep in our tents, we'd freeze. We use our tents in the spring and summer. Anyways, I'm so ready to go!

Day 48

October 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Next weekend is our camping trip! There's no school Monday because of Columbus Day, so that means we'll be gone for 3 days. We have a service club meeting tomorrow to go over the plans and make sure we have everything we need to bring. The campground we're going to has a barn with horses that you can ride too! It's going to be so much fun!

Day 47

October 5, 2008

Dear Diary, I feel bad I haven't written in a while, but Sierra and I have been hanging out. She's starting a new job tomorrow and wanted me to come shopping with her to find work clothes. Shopping is not my favorite thing to do, but I had a blast hanging out with my big sis. She took me out for lunch and icecream. I'm so glad she's back home again.

Day 46

September 29, 2008

Dear Diary, It's funny how I feel so relieved after a service project is done. I love doing them and working to make things better, but it's a lot of work! Things get pretty hectic right before an event. Then after a couple of days I'm already looking for another project we can work on. That's the way it goes. But I am excited that we're planning our first camping trip in a while.

Day 45

September 28, 2008

Dear Diary, I have been so busy that I haven't even had time to write until now. Yesterday was our big fundraiser for the new recycling center. We had teams competing at the Ben and Jerry's to see who could finish the Vermonster first. It's this big tub of twenty scoops of icecream plus all kinds of toppings. Nobody ended up finishing it! We almost met our goal of raising enough money, but lucky for us the mayor said the city would kick in the rest since we had worked so hard.

Day 44

September 23, 2008

Dear Diary, This afternoon I went hiking in the woods with Sierra. She wanted to see what new trails Dad and I have been following. We even saw a family of Mallard ducks by the lake. That's why I love going on the trails, you never know what you'll find.  Next time I'll have to remember to bring some bread for them.

Day 43

September 22, 2008

Dear Diary, Allison called last night! It didn't sound like she was in another state. She sounded just like she did when she lived in the next neighborhood over. We talked about school, and her new house. She even has her own bathroom inside her bedroom. I really do miss Allison though. Her parents are talking about coming back for vacation over winter break. That would be so awesome!

Day 42

September 18, 2008

Dear Diary, I think my parents were a little surprised. We collected over $200 in the hurricane jar at school. That means they're going to donate the same amount I collected. That's about $450 all together. Plus the other jars we put around town. I wasn't sure about using collection jars, but it really worked. Now tomorrow I have to call the charity we're going to send the money to.

Day 41

September 15, 2008

Dear Diary, Okay, no more hurricanes or natural disasters allowed! We were already collecting money in jars for Hurricane Gustav, so now that money can hopefully be enough to help for Hurricane Ike as well. My parents said they will match whatever money I collect from my school jar. That is so great! I hope it's a lot!

Day 40

September 12, 2008

Dear Diary, Uggh, we are going over to Gabrielle's house today. I know I can tolerate it for Mom's sake, but I'd rather not. I'd much rather stay here and hang out with my sister. I even asked Mom if I could, but she said no. Maybe Gabrielle will be having a good day where she's nice. I can only hope.

Day 39

September 10, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm so excited that we've finally set a date for our camping trip. Our club hasn't been camping in a while. It's the second weekend in October. I think we have that Monday off too for a holiday from school. I know some people like camping in a cabin where they can get in their car and drive to a restaurant, but not me. I like roughing it in tents and cooking our own food over a fire.

Day 38

September 6, 2008

Dear Diary, One sure way to forget about being sad is to stay busy. After hearing about Hurricane Gustav and all the people in Louisiana who need help, our service club had an idea. We're going to set up collection jars around town for people to drop change into. My teacher said we may even be able to bring a couple jars into school. Maybe one for the office and one for our classroom. Then we're going to give the money we collect to one of the charities helping the victims in Louisiana. Every little bit helps.

Day 37

September 3, 2008

Dear Diary, Allison and her family left for Massachusetts yesterday. I was really sad to see her go. We decided to trade stuffed teddy bears so we can each have something that belongs to the other one. It just seems weird to be going to school and doing things and she's not there. Mom says it takes time, but that I'll probably always miss her some.

Day 36

August 31, 2008

Dear Diary, I really don't need new clothes for school right now, I'd rather wait and buy new winter clothes. But I still need notebooks and pencils and all that other stuff. Our teacher already mailed a list of the supplies we need for the first day of school. There's probably 30 or 40 things on that list! Sierra said she would take me this afternoon.

Day 35

August 30, 2008

Dear Diary, So much going on lately. We scheduled our next service project for the end of September at Ben and Jerry's. My sister Sierra and I have been hanging out, which is cool since I haven't seen her in a while. She even climbed up into my treehouse today! And now that school is starting in 3 days I have to get shopping for school supplies.

Day 34

August 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Allison didn't get to spend the night until yesterday. They've been really busy packing and getting ready to move. Her mom said they leave next week. Allison and I had fun doing all the silly things we like to do. We stayed up late and made cookies. I think we ate more of the dough than we used to bake. I'm really going to miss her. Mom says we can email each other everyday if we want.

Day 33

August 23, 2008

Dear Diary, Allison called me this morning to tell me her family sold their house. That means she'll be leaving soon for Massachusetts. I knew it would happen sooner or later. I was hoping for much later, like never! Her family wants to get moved in before school starts. Since that's only a couple weeks away I know it won't be long. Mom suggested I invite Allison for a sleepover tomorrow night.

Day 32

August 21, 2008

Dear Diary, Sierra is home again! It's great to have her back, but it does feel kind of strange. We kind of got used to it being just the three of us. Tonight when I set the table for dinner, I forgot about Sierra and only set three places. We laughed about it. She keeps saying how much I've grown since she last saw me. Pretty soon I think I'll be as tall as Sierra.

Day 31

August 16, 2008

Dear Diary, You know, I love eating out, but lately it seems like we've had take-out more than ever. Before we know it, we're all starving and then it's too late to figure out what to cook. Mom promises that tonight is the last night for take out. Sierra will be home tomorrow, and Mom is going to make her favorite meal, Swiss steak and mashed potatoes. Yummy!

Day 30

August 15, 2008

Dear Diary, Things have been kind of hectic around here lately. Mom has been busy getting Sierra's room ready since she'll be home in a couple days. I've been busy getting this recycling project organized with my club. We still have to pick a date and figure out how we're going to advertise the event. So many details to work on, but I love it!

Day 29

August 10, 2008

Dear Diary, Sierra called again last night, and she'll be flying in next weekend. Not sure if she's done with school or how long she'll be staying with us. I hope for a while. When I was little we had a love/hate relationship. We could be getting along great one minute, and then arguing the next. But once Sierra went to study abroad, we started emailing and talking on the phone. We found out that we missed each other a lot.

Day 28

August 6, 2008

Dear Diary, My big sister Sierra is coming home soon! She's been studying abroad in France for the last two years. Since she left we've only seen her once. This was kind of a surprise to my parents too. They thought she still had one semester left. I guess she'll have to stay in my old room since I moved into her room. Hopefully she won't mind.

Day 27

August 2, 2008

Dear Diary, I hate to admit it, but I'm glad that Allison's family hasn't sold their house yet. I feel bad saying that, but it's true. I know that after they find someone to buy it that it won't be long till they move away. Mom says I should try not to think about that and instead focus on having fun with Allison. Sometimes I hate it when Mom is right.

Day 26

July 28, 2008

Dear Diary, My parents must know I'm depressed about Allison moving so soon. Yesterday they took me to the Ben and Jerry's icecream factory. It was good but didn't really make me feel any better, until I got my service project idea. It kind of came out of nowhere. They have this twenty scoop icecream there called the "Vermonster". And then it hit me! I'm going to bring it up at our next service club meeting to see if we could have an icecream eating contest to raise money for our recycling project.

Day 25

July 25, 2008

Dear Diary, Well, my best friend Allison is moving away. They found a house in Massachusetts and her dad has a new job all lined up. It made me sad to go over to her house and see the "For Sale" sign in their front yard. Is it bad to wish that they can't sell their house? I don't want her to move away.

Day 24

July 23, 2008

Dear Diary, Our service club has been talking about what our next service project should be. We're thinking about trying to set up a new recycling center. The other one is kind of far away and I don't think people bother driving their plastics and newspapers that far anyway. If we make it easier for people maybe they will recycle more often instead of throwing things in the garbage.

Day 23

July 20, 2008

Dear Diary, I think I'm finally starting to feel better today. I've been so tired from being sick. I never knew I could sleep so much. Mom kept nagging me to drink more liquids. Then everytime I drank too much I got sick again. But now I finally can keep food down. What a relief. If I ever get sick again it will be too soon.

Day 22

July 16, 2008

Dear Diary, How can you have the flu in the summer? I thought that was only when it's cold outside? At first Mom thought maybe the potato salad from our fishing trip was bad, but that's not it. I actually have a stomach flu. Ugggghhh! My stomach feels awful, and right now I'm going to just go to bed and hope that when I wake up this pain in my stomach is gone.

Day 21

July 13, 2008

Dear Diary, We had a lot of fun fishing yesterday with Dad. I got pretty good at baiting the hook. I think I still need a little more practice at reeling the fish in though. The fish didn't seem to like my bait as much as my mom's. She caught twice as many as I did! But we had a good time. Dad says we can go again sometime.

Day 20

July 12, 2008

Dear Diary, My dad is taking Mom and I fishing today. I've never been fishing before. But he says it's not that hard. I like learning how to do new things. Not sure about putting the bait on the hook, but I'll try.

Day 19

July 8, 2008

Dear Diary, Allison came over today. We made these really neat frienship bracelets. Allison really is my best friend. We've known each other since kindergarten. That's a really long time, isn't it? Her parents are talking about moving to Massachusetts. I hope they don't go. I'd be so sad if Allison moved away.

Day 18

July 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Whew...as much fun as it was, I'm relieved this project is done. I think it went pretty well, considering a few people from the club decided not to show up and help. But everything else seemed to fall in place. We have a few hundred Freedom Cards to send to the troops. Ms. Shannon called it a big success.

Day 17

July 3, 2008

Dear Diary, I feel like my brain is spinning around in my head so fast lately! So much left to do to get ready for our big service project tomorrow. I have all my supplies ready to go in boxes in the garage. Now I just have to finish getting the schedule together of who is doing what, when. That seems to be the hard part. My parents have decided to make a night of it, and they're going to help out some while they're at the fireworks festival. I better get busy!

Day 16

June 30, 2008

Dear Diary, Ms. Shannon has a great idea for our project. Since it's almost the Fourth of July, we're going to make that a part of it. When they have the fireworks festival at the park next Friday, we're going to set up a booth. That way we can have people there make their own Freedom Cards for the troops. It seems perfect to get people involved on such an important holiday. Now I just have to get together all the supplies we need. So much to do, I better get going!

Day 15

June 28, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm having a hard time with our Freedom Card project. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you're trying to get things organized and it feels like you're the only one helping. I think some kids are only in our service club to socialize and not to help. Don't get me wrong, I like to have fun too. But who says you can't have fun while you're working?

Day 14

June 26, 2008

Dear Diary, We have been trying to come up with a new service project idea for our club. Finally we have one. We're going to create and mail "Freedom cards" to the troops in Iraq. Ms. Shannon is going to let me organize the drive. We're not only going to make the cards ourselves, we're also going to get the people in our community to help with the cards. I think this will be a fun project that lets the soldiers know we're thinking about them.

Day 13

June 19, 2008

Dear Diary, Gabrielle drove me nuts all day yesterday and today. For somebody who wants to be my friend, she sure doesn't act like it. Mom thought we should do some crafts together. Gabrielle made fun of the way I draw. I try to bit my tongue and not say anything back, but it's really hard.

Day 12

June 18, 2008

Dear Diary, I wish a hole in the Earth would just swallow me up right now. Mom just told me that Gabrielle, her friend's daughter is coming over today to spend the night! She's younger then me, but she's so bossy and mean. I shouldn't have to play with someone I don't like, right? I don't want to hurt my mom's feelings, but I feel like I should say something. Just because she's friends with Cherie doesn't mean I have to be friends with her daughter.

Day 11

June 15, 2008

Dear Diary, For Father's Day today I made my dad a nature collection book. We like to go on hikes together and find different plants and flowers. So I made him a book with pictures of all the different ones in our area. I hope he likes it. There's even a log to keep track of which ones we find on our nature walks.

Day 10

June 13, 2008

Dear Diary, Yesterday my mom and I went to her friend's house. She has a daughter a little bit younger than me. The girl's name is Gabrielle. Because our moms have been friends for so long, Gabrielle and I have kind of grown up together. So it's more like she's my little sister. I wouldn't say she's my friend though. It makes it so hard, because I would rather play with my own friends.

Day 9

June 11, 2008

Dear Diary, It rained all last night, and when I woke up, it was still raining! I can't beleive clouds can hold so much rain. Hopefully it will stop soon. My friend Allison is coming over and we always like to be outside. There's a treehouse my dad built for me when I was little. Now it's kind of a place to hang out with my friends. But it's no fun when it rains.

Day 8

June 8, 2008

Dear Diary, I have to hurry because we're getting ready to go. We're on our way to the Vermont Dairy Festival. It's kind of a tradition that my family goes every year. They have horses, arts and crafts, and all kinds of fun things to do. We missed the fireworks they had last night, but that's okay. At least we get to spend the whole day there today.

Day 7

June 6, 2008

Dear Diary, I know, I know, it has been a while since I've written in my diary. But with school ending and our Memorial Weekend community project, there just hasn't been time. It's so much fun working to help other people. My mom is the one who got me started in my club. When I was little, she used to take me with her to soup kitchens to help. She always says that helping just one person makes a world of difference. How true.

Day 6

May 15, 2008

Dear Diary, I am so excited!! My service project this spring is to go to the local children’s hospital and help terminally ill children build a butterfly garden. We are spending Memorial Day weekend on this project. This is going to be so much fun.

Day 5

April 26, 2008

Dear Diary, I have a math test tomorrow so I don't have lots of time to write. Daddy is going to help me so I can be sure to get an "A" That's all that is going on with me today!

Day 4

April 23, 2008

Dear Diary, Mom took me to the mall today to get some new shoes and she let my friend Allison go too. We had fun looking at all the clothes and then had lunch in the food court. My mom is the best and I am so lucky.

Day 3

April 20, 2008

Dear Diary. Today was mostly boring. I helped mom clean her car and my little sister to clean her room. I can't wait for this weekend. My club is going to a sugar house to see Maple syrup made for one of our projects. It will be so cool and it's always so much fun no matter what we do.

Day 2

April 17, 2008

Dear Diary, School was so much fun today. It was my teacher's last day because she is going to have her baby. Ms. Reed from the other class helped us have a baby shower for her. We gave her bottles and some bibs and even got to have popcorn! It was more fun than school today.

Day 1

April 14, 2008

Dear Diary, Hi! I am starting this diary for a project for my club. Ms.Shannon, our leader said we will all have fun keeping track of stuff we do and that we will really be glad we did it when we are grown ups. I hope my life is not too boring to keep a diary!
