Katrina's Diary
Day 159
March 22, 2010
Dear Diary, Happy New Year! Kazakh celebrate today as the beginning of a new year. I think it's because it's the start of spring. My family is making a special dinner called Nauryz kozhe, which is made with wheat, oats, rice, barley, raisins, wild apricots, and millet. I know it sounds odd, but it's really good.
Day 158
March 16, 2010
Dear Diary, I wish Jody would play softball on our team. We already do soccer together, but it would be cool if we did softball together too. Jody doesn't like softball, so I guess that's not happening. Softball starts in April, and I cannot wait!
Day 157
March 8, 2010
Dear Diary, Okay, well now I'm actually happy my shoe ripped and I had to get another pair. We found these really awesome running shoes that are way better than the other ones anyway. They're so cool! I don't even want to play in them outside and get them dirty, but my mom says we can always wash them if they do get dirty. Sweet!
Day 156
March 6, 2010
Dear Diary, I cannot believe that my brand new shoes are ripped already! Mom just got them for me a week ago, and now I can't even wear them. The whole top of the shoe ripped when I was playing outside. Mom says we'll try to take them back to the store and get a different pair.
Day 155
February 27, 2010
Dear Diary, Oh my gosh! My dad just joined a hockey league. They play games against other leagues. I think it's kind of cool, but my mom is worried Dad will get hurt. I can't wait to go see his first game in a couple weeks!
Day 154
February 20, 2010
Dear Diary, Well, Jody and I had fun last night, but Mom says no more sleepovers for awhile. I think we stayed up too late, and then my parents couldn't sleep. Sorry Mom! We didn't mean to be loud, we were just having fun. Better get going, I have to get ready for soccer!
Day 153
February 19, 2010
Dear Diary, Jody is coming over to spend the night tonight. We haven't done that in a long time. We're going to play games and watch movies, and do lots of fun stuff. Hopefully my little brother will leave us alone so we can play. Maybe my mom should let Alek have one of his friends spend the night too, then he won't bother Jody and me.
Day 152
February 16, 2010
Dear Diary, I promised Alek that I would play a boardgame with him after school, but now I really don't feel like it. I'm just not in the mood right now. I didn't win the poetry contest. I got a ribbon that says "honorable mention", but everbody got those. Maybe next year I'll try again.
Day 151
February 9, 2010
Dear Diary, I've got it! Well, sort of. I haven't written my poem yet, but I know what I'm going to write it about, Valentine's Day! It's perfect since Valentine's Day is this weekend. I think I'll write it about friends. Time to get started!
Day 150
February 4, 2010
Dear Diary, Our school is having a poetry contest, and I think I'm going to enter it. I've written lots of short stories, but only a few poems. I haven't decided what to write about yet, but I guess I better hurry up and decide. You have to turn them in by next Friday...
Day 149
January 27, 2010
Dear Diary, We checked out one of those movies from the red box thing at the store and it didn't even work. Dad said the disc is scratched really bad. Well, that stinks. We had our popcorn all ready and then couldn't even watch the movie. We played "Uno" instead, and that was pretty fun too.
Day 148
January 22, 2010
Dear Diary, My mom is making my brother and I clean out the car. She says we have made such a disaster in the backseat with snacks and papers and everything else, that we get to clean it up. Oh joy, just what I want to do tomorrow morning.
Day 147
January 20, 2010
Dear Diary, I was thinking the other day, that I can't remember why I named my guinea pig Buttercup. It seems like I should remember. Maybe I just heard it somewhere and I liked it. I think I was like 6 or 7 when I got him. He was a birthday present.
Day 146
January 17, 2010
Dear Diary, I keep hearing this song on the radio. I have no idea who sings it, but I love it! Maybe if I ask one of my friends they'll know who it is. Her voice sounds really familiar. Oops, time for dinner-
Day 145
January 10, 2010
Dear Diary, Back to school tomorrow. Vacation went by so fast! I wonder how long until spring break? I think it's in April. Oh well, I guess I better pick out my clothes for school and go make my lunch. See ya!
Day 144
January 6, 2010
Dear Diary, My brother can be so gross sometimes. He keeps making rude noises and calling me bathroom names. Mom says to just ignore him, and he'll stop. It's so annoying though! He follows me all around doing it. I'm so glad I'm a girl.
Day 143
December 29, 2009
Dear Diary, Well, all done dog sitting for this time. I'm kind of sad it's over, but Mrs. Esher says I can come play with Buster anytime. She's a really nice lady. I made like $80 too! The first thing I want to buy is a new journal. This one's getting pretty full. Time for lunch!
Day 142
December 24, 2009
Dear Diary, Buster the dog doesn't like to stay outside for very long since it's so cold. He does his business, and then he's all done. So I've been trying to play with him inside his house. Mostly he just wants his belly scratched. What a funny dog!
Day 141
December 17, 2009
Dear Diary, Mrs. Esher, my neighbor, just asked me if I can babysit her dog again for the week, starting Monday. I said sure! It wasn't so hard last time, and I got paid too. Buster is such a good dog.
Day 140
December 14, 2009
Dear Diary, I was in the store with my mom today, and some lady sneezed right in my face! I thought grown-ups knew to cover their sneezes with their arm, even I know that. How gross!
Day 139
December 6, 2009
Dear Diary, What is it with boys and remote controls? When my dad is around, he has to have the remote at all times, and now even my little brother is getting that way. All they do is keep changing the channels, they never watch anything!
Day 138
December 2, 2009
Dear Diary, My mom is on some new health kick, and she just ordered some fancy blender she saw on an infomercial. Who cares if it can shop an entire cabbage? I don't even like cabbage! Can it make milkshakes and yogurt smoothies? Now we're talking!
Day 137
November 26, 2009
Dear Diary, Thanksgiving is one of my most favorite holidays. I love the history of why we celebrate that first dinner between the Native Americans and the pilgrims. And I love the food too! It's even more special this year with Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric here. I better go, we're going to go for a walk.
Day 136
November 23, 2009
Dear Diary, At soccer tonight, it was really awful. We lost the game 7-2. I think that's our worst loss ever. But it got really ugly when everyone on our team started yelling at each other and blaming people for why we lost. That makes it no fun at all. Our coach was really upset, and lectured us forever about sportsmanship and being a team player. I hope we do better next time.
Day 135
November 18, 2009
Dear Diary, I just found out that Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric are coming for Thanksgiving! Isn't that the best news? We usually have just us for Thanksgiving, so my mom is already getting things ready. I'll have to show Aunt Sarah the story I've been working on. I'm not finished yet, but hopefully soon.
Day 134
November 10, 2009
Dear Diary, We had our last softball game, we lost by one point. I guess you can't win all the time. A really funny thing happened though. When I was running from second to third base, my cleat came off, and I had to run the rest of the way without it! I didn't care, but it was funny!
Day 133
November 5, 2009
Dear Diary, It's almost 8:00 and we haven't even had dinner yet! My mom is making some new green chili she's never made before. Well, I guess it's taking a little longer than she thought it would. Please hurry Mom!
Day 132
November 1, 2009
Dear Diary, My costume was supposed to be a vampire...not a scarey looking one, but a vampire. Maybe I needed a cape of something, because a couple different people asked me if I was supposed to be George Washington or something. What? Next year I'll just go as a soccer player-
Day 131
October 26, 2009
Dear Diary, My friend Jody was asking me about Halloween and Kazakh tradition the other day. Yes, we celebrate Halloween in Kazakhstan too because it is an American and European holiday, but I don't really remember it when I was there since I was pretty small. I guess I would say it's not quite as big there.
Day 130
October 21, 2009
Dear Diary, I can't believe that softball is almost over already. I swear, if it wasn't for it being so cold in the winter we could have softball all year. At least I have indoor soccer to look forward to, right? My mom says maybe we should take a break from all the sports all year, but I think I would be bored.
Day 129
October 15, 2009
Dear Diary, At last! Today was the last day of our testing, and I'm just glad to be done. My mom asked how I think I did. I didn't really know what to tell her. I think I did okay, but it's hard to tell when the questions are so hard.
Day 128
October 11, 2009
Dear Diary, This coming week we have our MEAP testing. We have to do it every October, to show what we know in reading, math, and pretty much all the other subjects. It's not like a test you have to study for, it's just showing what you already learned. I bet there's no homework this week then.
Day 127
October 6, 2009
Dear Diary, My teacher this year is okay, but I really miss Mrs. Vickers. She was like the sweetest teacher ever. My teacher now is Mrs. Esterbody, and sometimes it seems like she doesn't really like being a teacher. I know it's probably not fair to compare the two teachers, but I can't really help it.
Day 126
September 29, 2009
Dear Diary, Everybody is sick lately. I mean everybody. Yesterday we only had 7 kids in my entire class. Everyone else was home sick with the flu. So far I've been okay, so I really hope I don't get it. I hate to miss softball.
Day 125
September 26, 2009
Dear Diary, Yikes! I woke up this morning and came downstairs and saw a roach on the kitchen floor! You know how I hate bugs! At least it wasn't running around, but still, it was on its back, kicking it's legs, and I screamed. Alek came and rescued me by picking it up with a napkin. Thank you Alek!
Day 124
September 19, 2009
Dear Diary, We're going to the mall today to get our family portraits done. I swear we just had a family picture done not that long ago, but my mom wants a new one. She says we keep growing and changing, so she has to keep updating our pictures. Fun, fun, fun....not really!
Day 123
September 17, 2009
Dear Diary, Softball is here! It kind of snuck up on me, even though I know fall ball always starts in September. Tonight at practice we had to take turns throwing the ball through hoola hoops our coach had hung up around the field. It was pretty easy in the beginning, but then my arm was getting kind of tired. Well, I still have reading to do before bed, so I better go.
Day 122
September 10, 2009
Dear Diary, My mom always makes us these yummy yogurt smoothies. They're awesome! Today I actually saw her make them. If I didn't already know that I like them I'm not sure I'd eat them. She puts yogurt, bananas, and strawberries in there. And now I know her secret ingredient. It's spinach leaves! I had no idea, and I don't even like spinach, but you really can't taste it.
Day 121
September 5, 2009
Dear Diary, My brother Alek is in so much trouble. He told my parents that he's not going to clean his room anymore. They were not happy about that. Now he's grounded, and they said no tv, or Xbox, or anything until he cleans it. Why does Alek have to be so stubborn? I used to have a messy room too, but then I realized it was easier to find my stuff if everything was nice and neat.
Day 120
August 29, 2009
Dear Diary, You know what's really gross? It's when you get all ready to take a big gulp of milk from the glass you just poured, and then swallow it, and realize that the milk is bad. Ewwwwwww! That is the worst! Now I'm not sure I want to drink milk for awhile. Can you blame me? Water sounds good-
Day 119
August 27, 2009
Dear Diary, I can't believe that summer is already almost over, and now school is about to start! I feel like I didn't even get a chance to do all the things I wanted. I had planned to work on my stories more, and do skill training for soccer, and more sleepovers with friends. It just went by so fast! I really like school though, so I guess there's always winter vacation to work on the other stuff, right?
Day 118
August 20, 2009
Dear Diary, I was trying to work on my stories, but Alek keeps bothering me. I think he's bored. We're both ready for school to start. But I can find things to do by myself, like writing. I don't think Alek knows what to do when he's bored. Little brothers can be pests sometimes.
Day 117
August 15, 2009
Dear Diary, I totally forgot to bring my diary with me to New York, that's why I haven't written in awhile. Oops! The trip was a lot of fun. Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric bought a new house and so we stayed there instead of a hotel, which was more fun, especially since they have a dog to play with. It's a really big house. I'm not sure why they need so many bedrooms for just 2 people.
Day 116
August 8, 2009
Dear Diary, My parents are taking us to New York to see Aunt Sarah next week! Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric that is. This is the last chance we have before school starts. I'm so excited! I loved New York when we went for their wedding-
Day 115
August 4, 2009
Dear Diary, My brother is so funny to listen to when he plays. He makes all these sound effects when he's playing with his Legos. And the way his guys talk to each other makes me laugh. He probably says the same thing about me and my dolls-
Day 114
July 29, 2009
Dear Diary, Now I feel a little better. Jody called last night and said she couldn't call me earlier because her mom made her go run errands with her all day. Okay, I guess, but couldn't she have called me on her mom's cellphone? Then I wouldn't have been sitting around waiting for her.
Day 113
July 28, 2009
Dear Diary, Jody was supposed to call me so that she could come over to play, but she hasn't called yet. Well, now that it's after lunch time, it's starting to be too late. I know I should just call her, but when you tell someone you're going to call them, you should call.
Day 112
July 20, 2009
Dear Diary, I think I finally figured out how to do it! Listen to this...
Buttercup you are so sweet and kind,
I can't believe that you're all mine,
I love the way you snuggle me so warm,
That's all I have so far, but it's getting there-
Day 111
July 14, 2009
Dear Diary, I want to write a poem about Buttercup, but I'm having a hard time. I usually like to write my poems with words that rhyme, but I can't think of something to rhyme with Buttercup. Maybe I should have given him a shorter name, like "Bob". It might have been easier to rhyme!
Day 110
July 9, 2009
Dear Diary, Alek and I didn't win the bubble blowing contest, but we did eat lots of cherries and cherry icecream after the contest. It was so good! I think I ate way too many cherries. Cherries are my most favorite thing to eat. I just wish we had them all year and not just in the summer!
Day 109
July 5, 2009
Dear Diary, The Cherry festival is here! We already went to watch the air show yesterday. Dad and my brother wanted to see that. Tomorrow my mom is going to take Alek and I to enter the bubble gum contest. The winner is whoever blows the biggest bubble. I don't chew a lot of gum, but hey, you never know. I know how to blow bubbles, so maybe I'll be lucky!
Day 108
June 26, 2009
Dear Diary, My dad rocks! He took me to this really cool restaurant for lunch where they had chocolate velvet cupcakes for dessert, delicious! Then we went shopping at a couple of my favorite stores and found some really cute shirts and shorts. I still have a lot of money left because my dad ended up buying a lot of it for me. He said it would be our little secret!
Day 107
June 25, 2009
Dear Diary, My dad wants to take me shopping tomorrow since I have some spending money now. I think we're going to go to lunch too. We haven't had a day together with just the two of us in a while. It sounds like fun, as long as Dad doesn't try picking out clothes for me. He tries hard, but Dad has no fashion sense!
Day 106
June 20, 2009
Dear Diary, They gave me $75! That's how much my neighbors gave me for taking care of Buster. At first my parents said that it was too much money, but Mrs. Esher said I had earned it. I don't think I'll be allowed to spend it all, some of the money will probably go into my savings account. Hopefully I can buy something small, maybe a new outfit or something.
Day 105
June 17, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm kind of glad that my neighbors will be home tomorrow, I'm tired. I wake up at 7:00 every morning to go feed the dog and take him for a walk. That's even earlier than I get up during school! Buster really is a sweet dog. He likes me to brush him and play with him. I think he misses his owners. And when my mom and I went to the grocery store, I bought him some treats. I think he liked them-
Day 104
June 11, 2009
Dear Diary, So far the only problem I've had taking care of the dog was getting into the house. At first I forgot the alarm code that Mrs. Olive gave me, and the alarm started going off! Mom came running over, but by then I had remembered it, and already had the alarm shut off. That was close!
Day 103
June 7, 2009
Dear Diary, Guess what? One of our neighbors is going away for vacation and asked if I would like to earn some extra money and take care of their dog for them while they're gone. Mom and Dad said it was okay, so I'm definitely doing it! I've never had my own dog, but I'm sure it can't be that hard. You have to feed and water them, take them outside and give them lots of love. We'll see how it goes-
Day 102
May 30, 2009
Dear Diary, Little Buttercup is so sweet. He's making all his cute noises while he's running all around my room. I wish he would just stay in my lap, but Buttercup is adventurous. He's always looking to see what clothes are on my floor. I have to be careful, or he'll chew whatever's on my floor.
Day 101
May 28, 2009
Dear Diary, I never knew my dad and his brothers and sisters were on a gameshow when they were younger! It was from way before he met my mom. It was kind of funny watching the tape of it last night. Dad had a funny looking mustache. I asked him what they won, and he said a lifetime supply of cleaning products. No, that's not a very exciting prize if you ask me-
Day 100
May 19, 2009
Dear Diary, I cannot believe it! I lost one of my library books. I never lose my books. It's due Thursday, and I have no idea where it is. I've already checked my classroom, the car, and my entire room. My mom's gonna be so upset! Oh please, please let me find it, or else I'll have to buy the library a new one-
Day 99
May 16, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm so so so excited for soccer to start next week! I've been asking Alek to practice with me outside every day. We picked up our uniforms and gear, and so I'm all set. I still don't know if Jody and I will be on the same team, hopefully!
Day 98
May 9, 2009
Dear Diary, Since tomorrow is Mother's Day, I wanted to make something special for my mom. I painted her this pretty picture, and I'm going to write a poem to put on a heart in the middle of the paper. I hope she likes it! Dad said we're going to make mom a special lunch too. Lots to do!
Day 97
May 5, 2009
Dear Diary, I just totally freaked when I was in the shower! When I was in there washing my hair, I looked up and saw this bug crawling on the ceiling. He wasn't right above my head, but still. I had to keep watching him to make sure he didn't come near me. When I was done I yelled for my dad to come get him before I would get out of the shower! You know I don't like bugs!
Day 96
April 26, 2009
Dear Diary, Our blueberry pancakes turned into a disaster this morning. I guess we were using way too much batter The pancakes were so huge you couldn't hardly flip them. And then, they didn't even get cooked all the way inside. Kind of a mess! I ended up eating cereal instead. Dad says we'll try again next weekend-
Day 95
April 22, 2009
Dear Diary, We went to the park after school with some friends. There's this park in our neighborhood we love to go to because it's usually all kids we know. I was sad when it was time to leave. My brother Alek really didn't want to go, he was hiding at the top of the slide. But once our mom told him he'd be staying in his room until dinner he came down.
Day 94
April 16, 2009
Dear Diary, It hurts to move. Soccer yesterday, softball today. I think my arms and legs are going to fall off. Okay, obviously they're not REALLY going to fall off. That's a bit of an exaggeration! But I am exhausted. Exhausted and hungry. I wonder what's in the fridge-
Day 93
April 14, 2009
Dear Diary, Jody and I are going to do a little soccer after school tomorrow. I know, softball season just started, but softball and soccer season overlap a little bit. At least it's only for a month or so. It gets very tiring playing more than one sport at a time!
Day 92
April 7, 2009
Dear Diary, It's so cool having Aunt Sarah and her husband here! We've been showing them all around the city. My first softball game Saturday was pretty exciting too. I could hear my mom and dad cheering for me in the bleachers. It made me a little nervous, but in a good way.
Day 91
April 3, 2009
Dear Diary, Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric are coming to visit Sunday! We haven't seen them since the wedding. They're staying for a whole week. That means they can come to one of my softball games. Our first game is tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Day 90
March 27, 2009
Dear Diary, I promised my dad I would try to stay awake tonight for the Michigan State/Kansas basketball game, but I'm already tired, and it's only 8:30! Dad said maybe I can just stay up for part of it. Okay, but the game doesn't even start for another hour! Go Spartans!!!
Day 89
March 24, 2009
Dear Diary, 2 days ago was an important holiday. It's called Nauryz, and it is one of the oldest holidays celebrated on Earth. Kazakhs celebrate this first day of spring with planting trees and lots of food. Well, since we still have snow, we had to settle for buying some pretty plants to put on the table. Mom made all kinds of foods that were American and Kazakh. It makes me happy that Mom tries so hard to make our culture part of our family.
Day 88
March 17, 2009
Dear Diary, Alek was snoring so loud last night. I could hear him from all the way in my room! How does he sleep in there with all that noise? I ended up using my pillow to cover up my ear, that finally helped. I don't think I've ever heard myself snore. I hope if I do it doesn't sound like my brother!
Day 87
March 13, 2009
Dear Diary, I thought the symphony was pretty cool. My favorite instrument was the flute. Some of the songs were a little bit long, but that's alright, it was still fun. I sat next to Jody and Mrs. Vickers. We didn't get to eat lunch until after the bus brought us back to school, and by then I was starving!
Day 86
March 10, 2009
Dear Diary, Our class is going on a fieldtrip tomorrow to the performing arts center. We're going to see the symphony play. I've never been to the symphony before, but it sounds very grown-up to say you're going to the symphony. My mom has my dress all ready to go since my teacher, Mrs. Vickers, said we should dress nice. I wonder what it will be like...
Day 85
March 4, 2009
Dear Diary, Soccer will be over in a couple more weeks, and then in April softball starts! I'm a little nervous about starting softball since I'm so used to t-ball, but Coach Jeff says I'm ready. I'll be in the C division. Our team is "The Storm". Kind of cool. Our jerseys are black with these spooky eyes on the fronts that say "Storm".
Day 84
February 27, 2009
Dear Diary, Still not enough snow. It's just not sticking aorund, and some of it has been more like sleet. Alek and I are going to go play soccer in the basement. I asked Jody if she wanted to come play, but she can't. Guess I'll have to settle for my little brother.
Day 83
February 25, 2009
Dear Diary, Snow, snow, and more snow! Alek and I have been wanting to build a snow fort, but there's not enough snow on the ground right now. So, we had to settle for a snowman instead. But it's snowing today, and I'm hoping it'll be enough for us to build a fort.
Day 82
February 21, 2009
Dear Diary, I gave Buttercup a bath. I'm not sure if you're really supposed to wash guinea pigs, but he wasn't smelling so good. And Buttercup really didn't seem to mind either. He just sat still in the sink. Then I held him like a little baby wrapped in a towel to dry him off. Now he's all sweet and clean!
Day 81
February 18, 2009
Dear Diary, Aunt Sarah called. She and her new husband Eric are planning to come visit us next month! That will be so much fun! Maybe they can come watch me play indoor soccer. Our season won't be over until April. I'm so glad my foot hasn't been hurting anymore. Now if our team can just score a few more goals we'll be alright.
Day 80
February 10, 2009
Dear Diary, Ohmigosh, yesterday our furnace broke. We went out for dinner while the guy was there fixing it, because our house got pretty cold very fast. Thankfully he was able to fix it so our house wasn't cold last night. Brrrr, that would have been way too cold!
Day 79
February 5, 2009
Dear Diary, Good news! My ankle is finally feeling better. I had to miss a practice last week because it was still swollen, but now it feels great. At least I didn't break it and have to wear a cast like Gwen did on our team last year. She had to miss almost the whole season! That would not be good-
Day 78
January 27, 2009
Dear Diary, My ankle is really sore. I knew I had kind of bent it funny during our soccer game, but then it seemed okay. By Sunday night it hurt pretty bad though. Dad says it's a little bit swollen, I just need to put some ice on it. Our next practice is tomorrow, hopefully it'll feel better by then.
Day 77
January 25, 2009
Dear Diary, I had so much fun at soccer yesterday! We didn't win, but it was a really close game. I scored a goal too! Our coach said she's proud of how hard we played, and that it's okay, we'll get them next time. It's not like we lost to a bad team or anything, they were really good.
Day 76
January 21, 2009
Dear Diary, Don't you hate it when you have this one favorite pair of shoes you like to wear, and you can only find one of them? Sometimes I swear Alek hides one of them on purpose. I've searched everywhere and can't find it. Yes, I have other shoes, but these are my most comfortable ones. Mom even tried to throw them away once because she said they were all worn out, but I rescued them!
Day 75
January 15, 2009
Dear Diary, The good news is there's not much snow falling right now. The bad news is that it's still only 11 degress outside! That means it's just pretty much too cold to do anything except stay inside. I'm kind of tired of the board games with Alek and playing in my room. At least tomorrow there's indoor soccer. That gives me something to look forward to-
Day 74
January 7, 2009
Dear Diary, We are learning in school about animals that hibernate. I wondered if Buttercup, my guinea pig, hibernates since he does sleep a lot, so I asked my teacher. Mrs. Vickers said no that there aren't really any household pets that hibernate. Well, maybe Buttercup just really likes to sleep!
Day 73
January 4, 2009
Dear Diary, I feel really bad right now. Yesterday was my mom's birthday and we totally forgot! Sometimes it's hard to remember since it's right after the holidays, but that's still no excuse. Mom seemed a little sad, but we made up for it today. We took her out for brunch to this awesome diner in town. And, my dad brought her this beautiful bouquet of flowers. They were star gazer lillies, which are her most favorite.
Day 72
December 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Ugghh...starting a story for me is always the hardest part. I like the idea of writing about a character with super powers, but I'm really struggling with how it begins. Think, think, think! Maybe it could be about a young girl who doesn't know she has super powers yet, and something happens where she starts to figure it out. Yeah, I like that idea. I think I'll go get started!
Day 71
December 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I am so bored! It's about 25 degrees outside, and the snow is so bad that we couldn't even go to play indoor soccer today. I guess the only thing I can do inside is maybe start a new story. I've been wanting to, but couldn't think of what I wanted to write about. Maybe something about a girl who has super powers, that's something I haven't done before.
Day 70
December 21, 2008
Dear Diary, Jody came over this afternoon, but Alek kept bothering us. I know he just wants to have fun too, but he needs to invite his own friend over to play. He just kept following us all around the house, no matter where we played. I know Jody understands, because she has a little sister, but still. Oh my gosh, guess who's knocking at my door right now?!?!
Day 69
December 16, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight after dinner we had a fire in our fireplace and roasted marshmallows. Yum, yum! It's a sticky mess, but well worth it. I don't even like marshmallows plain out of the bag, but they taste totally different once they're all melty. Well, I guess I need to start getting ready for bed. Only 3 more days of school till vacation.
Day 68
December 12, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so happy that indoor soccer season has started. It's way too cold outside to play soccer or t-ball, AND it has been snowing every day for about the last week or so. Pretty soon we'll be able to build a snow fort, and maybe even go snow tubing at Timberlee Hills. That's always so much fun!
Day 67
December 8, 2008
Dear Diary, This report I'm doing about the Republic of Kazakhstan is helping me learn a lot about where I was born. Like, I didn't know that it is one of the largest countries in the world, and has one of the world's largest lakes. It used to be part of Russia before it became it's own republic. Kazakhs are people who love music and horses as big parts of the culture. So much to learn....I wonder if one day I'll ever get to go back to Kazakhstan.
Day 66
November 25, 2008
Dear Diary, Our teacher has decided to assign each kid in my class a different country to research and do a project on. She asked me if I would mind doing Kazakhstan since that is where I was born. I think it's actually kind of neat, especially since I don't remember much from when I was little there. I'm going to get started over Thanksgiving weekend.
Day 65
November 21, 2008
Dear Diary, In Social Studies we have been learning about countries in Asia and Europe. The other kids in my class were fascinated to hear that I was not born in America, but it Kazakhstan. Then they started asking me lots of questions about what it looks like there, and what kinds of animals did we have....I had to tell them that I only remember a little because I was four years old when I was adopted by my parents. I remember the mountains, and things like that.
Day 64
November 11, 2008
Dear Diary, Since this is our last week of t-ball, Coach decided to do something different for practice today. We played kickball instead! I never played kickball before, but it was a lot of fun. 2 more games this week, and then that's it. Next year I can move up to the next level!
Day 63
November 10, 2008
Dear Diary, I was having a really hard time deciding which party to go to since I was invited to two of them this coming Saturday. I really want to go to both! Then I finally came up with an idea to make it so I wouldn't have to decide. I had my mom hide the invitations behind her back, and then I picked the one in her right hand. That made it way easier!
Day 62
November 8, 2008
Dear Diary, I was invited to 2 birthday parties at the same time on the same day! The girls are both in my class. I feel really bad, but there's no way I can go to both. But how do I decide which party to go to? Do I go to the one that I got invited to first? Or the one that I'm better friends with? That's hard to decide. The parties are next week, so I'll have to do something...
Day 61
November 4, 2008
Dear Diary, Only a few more weeks of t-ball. This season is going by really fast. Then instead of playing outdoor soccer, I'll do indoor soccer. Outdoor soccer is for summer. So glad, because it would be pretty hard to play soccer in the cold and snow pretty in the winter. Time for dinner, I'm starving!
Day 60
October 31, 2008
Dear Diary, It's supposed to be absolutely freezing cold when we go trick or treating tonight. Not that it's ever really warm for Halloween in Michigan, but still. I don't know how far we'll make it through the neighborhood. That's okay, I'm not as candy crazy as my brother is, I just want to have fun.
Day 59
October 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm all set for Halloween now. I'm going to be that girl from Highschool Musical. You know, the one with the blonde hair. I think it will be fun to be her for one night. I wonder if everyone will recognize me with a blonde wig on?!?!?! Alek is going to be Superman. Our costumes don't really go together very good, but I guess they don't really have to. Trick or treat!
Day 58
October 24, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight was pumpkin carving night. I accidentally cut off a couple of my jack-o-lantern's teeth! That's okay, Alek's green pumpkin gourd thing looks like a monster. After we got done carving our pumpkins we baked the seeds. They're kind of salty like popcorn, but they were really good.
Day 57
October 20, 2008
Dear Diary, My family went to the pumpkin patch yesterday. Alek and Dad are always trying to find the biggest, ugliest pumpkins, and Mom and I try to find the cutest pumpkins. We usually end up buying at least two of them. This year Alek picked a strange looking green one. I'm not sure it's actually even a pumpkin. What are those other things called? Gourds or something? We had a lot of fun and couldn't stop laughing.
Day 56
October 15, 2008
Dear Diary, So anyways, back to the wedding! There was a big bbq at the park the day before where we ate and played frisbee. Then the next day was the wedding. It all went by so fast. The funniest part was the little flower girl running up and down the aisle during the ceremony. Now Aunt Sarah and Uncle Eric are on their honeymoon, some cruiseship. And here we are back at home and going to school. I wish they could have another wedding, that was a lot of fun!
Day 55
October 14, 2008
Dear Diary, This is the first chance I've had to write in my diary since we came home from New York. We had such a good time at the wedding! Aunt Sarah's dress was amazing and then there was lots of dancing and fun. At the ceremony I read the poem I had written for Aunt Sarah and my new Uncle Eric. She said I did a good job. I'll write more tomorrow, got to go to t-ball!
Day 54
October 9, 2008
Dear Diary, We're sitting here waiting at the airport. Dad said our flight was delayed. I have no idea how long we have to wait, but I hope not long. I'm too excited to wait!
Day 53
October 7, 2008
Dear Diary, We leave in two more days for the wedding! I'm so excited I can hardly sleep at night. We get back on a plane and head to New York City again on Thursday. Then there's a big dinner and the next day is the big day. I have to ask my friend Jody if she can take care of Buttercup while we're gone. Hopefully she'll say yes. Buttercup's not too much work, but you do need to feed her and change her water every day.
Day 52
October 4, 2008
Dear Diary, It's our turn to bring the snack and drinks for after the t-ball game. Mom wanted to bring carrot sticks. I like carrots, but I don't think most kids are going to want carrots after their game. Usually we have crackers or cereal bars or something. So we agreed on cheese crackers. Thanks Mom!
Day 51
October 1, 2008
Dear Diary, It was really really fun going on the trampoline at Jody's house! I can't believe how high you can bounce on there. I felt like a gymnast or something. And then when we got off I felt like I was still bouncing on there, and it felt strange to walk on the ground. I hope we can do it again someday soon!
Day 50
September 30, 2008
Dear Diary, My friend Jody invited me over her house tomorrow after school so we can go on her trampoline. I'm kind of excited, I've never been on a trampoline before. Mom made me promise to be careful and not to do any flips or fancy stuff. If it's my first time I don't think I'd be able to do flips anyway. That probably takes a lot of practice. Anyways, Alek is whining about how he wants to go now...
Day 49
September 28, 2008
Dear Diary, We had our first t-ball game yesterday. We did pretty good I think. I did my first hit off the tee, and my second hit from a coach pitch! After every game Coach Jeff gives a player the game ball for best effort. I didn't get it this game, but hopefully one game I will.
Day 48
September 26, 2008
Dear Diary, I am so glad I'm a girl and not a boy. Boys do strange things sometimes that I would never think of doing. My parents were moving some furniture into Alek's room that they bought. Well, they took out the dresser drawers to make it not so heavy to carry. Apparently, while we were outside, Alek tried to put his head in the open space of the dresser where a drawer would go, and he got stuck! He tried to pull his head back out, but his ears wouldn't fit. He was screaming and crying. We came running in, and our dad had to help him get out. Boys!
Day 47
September 21, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom and I have been having a really hard time finding a dress for me to wear to Aunt Sarah's wedding. It's only three weeks away! The problem with a dress is that the weather is going to be a little cooler and all the dresses we find are more for summer. They're cute, but they all have spaghetti straps. I told Mom I don't mind being a little cold. Besides, it's not like we're going to be outside the whole time. Hopefully we'll find a dress soon!
Day 46
September 17, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been reading a few of the Skippyjon Jones books from the library. They're so cute. This kitten's ears and head are way to big for his body. But he's so adorable because he has such a great imagination, and sometimes that gets him into trouble. There's a new book coming out soon I think.
Day 45
September 15, 2008
Dear Diary, Yeah! I do have Coach Jeff again! We have one practice a week plus two games. That sounds like a lot, but it goes fast. I think it will be a lot of fun. Usually I do my hitting off the tee, but I've been practicing with my dad and I think I'm ready for the coach pitch during games. Better go get ready for dinner...
Day 44
September 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight I should find out which team I'm on for t-ball, and who my coach is. We have several different teams since so many kids play, so you never know. I'm kind of hoping I have the same coach as last year, Coach Jeff. He wants us to learn and teaches us a lot, but he makes it fun, not just work.
Day 43
September 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom is kind of grumpy this afternoon. I think it's because our washing machine just broke. And when the repair guy came out to fix it he said it would be cheaper to buy a new one. So we're going tonight to buy a new washer. Not fun, but I guess we have to.
Day 42
September 7, 2008
Dear Diary, I got to go to the store with my mom today and help pick out Aunt Sarah's wedding present. She registered for so many beautiful things that it was hard to decide. We finally picked these beautiful dishes with a blue pattern that she wanted. After that, we went out for icecream. Alek and Dad stayed home because they don't really like shopping.
Day 41
September 4, 2008
Dear Diary, It's been a little strange hearing my name on the radio and tv so much lately. Not that they're talking about me, but Hurricane Katrina. Ever since that other hurricane was heading for Louisiana I kept hearing it. Some kids at school asked me if that's what I was named after. If Hurricane Katrina was only three years ago, that's not possible!
Day 40
August 31, 2008
Dear Diary, Two more days until the first day of school. I think fall is my favorite season. All the leaves on the trees always look so beautiful. Alek and I like to rake up the leaves once they fall from the trees. We put them in a big pile and jump into them. At least it's not so hot out and we can play outside more. Pretty soon...
Day 39
August 29, 2008
Dear Diary, T-ball will be starting in a couple weeks, right when school starts. My dad took me and bought me a new glove. Alek and I have been practicing outside after dinner. We set up a hoola hoop in the grass and take turns trying to throw the ball right into the hoop. Another way we practice is to lay a big bucket on its side and try aiming the balls into it. This will be my last year doing t-ball, then I'll be able to play softball.
Day 38
August 27, 2008
Dear Diary, I think I'm just about finished with my poem for Aunt Sarah's wedding. I decided not to make the words rhyme. I think it sounds better that way. When I'm finished I'm going to email it to Aunt Sarah to make sure she likes it. The wedding is only six weeks away! It's going to be so much fun!
Day 37
August 22, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight our parents took us out to dinner. Sometimes Mom and Dad choose where we eat. And other times, they let us pick. When Alek and I get to pick, we always go to the same place. The dinners are okay, but the desserts are the best! They have these "garbage pail" sundaes that have icecream with oreo cookies and gummie worms in them.
Day 36
August 20, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so sad. I tried to download the pictures I took on our vacation to New York City. All of a sudden, the computer said there was some kind of an error. And now when I try to view them on the camera, it shows empty files. Out of the fifty or sixty pictures I took, only four are still on there. Computers are great until they don't work. My mom even tried to see if she could save them, but no luck.
Day 35
August 16, 2008
Dear Diary, My friend Jody from soccer is having a birthday party today. Her parents are taking us to some fancy restaurant in town. I've never been there before. I'm so glad Jody and I have become such good friends. At first I wasn't sure about giving her a second chance, but now I'm so glad I did!
Day 34
August 12, 2008
Dear Diary, I didn't think it would be this hard writing a poem for Aunt Sarah's wedding. I think I'm a little worried about saying everything just right. I don't want it to sound too cheesy, but it is a wedding! Weddings are supposed to be a little cheesy aren't they?
Day 33
August 7, 2008
Dear Diary, Last weekend when we were in New York Aunt Sarah finally told me the suprise. She'd been waiting to tell me what part I could help with for her wedding. My brother Alek is an usher, Mom is a bridesmaid and Dad is a groomsman . Well, she asked me if I would write a poem to read at the ceremony. How perfect! I love to write, but I better get started soon. I want to make sure Aunt Sarah likes it when I'm finished.
Day 32
August 3, 2008
Dear Diary, The funniest thing happened at our big family picnic yesterday. We were all having a good time and then we noticed it started getting really cloudy. We kept throwing the football and eating. Well, all of a sudden it started pouring rain! We had nowhere to go really. We were all completely soaked! We ran and hid under this little bridge they have there until the rain stopped after a little while. We were all laughing. I though everybody would leave after that, but we didn't. We went right out and kept on with our picnic. Eventaully we dried off when the sun came back out. What fun!
Day 31
August 1, 2008
Dear Diary, I couldn't sleep last night I was so excited about our trip to New York. So now we're waiting at the airport in Detroit to catch the next part of our flight. We had to fly from Traverse City to Detroit and now the rest of the way to New York City. Only a few more hours and we'll be there! Aunt Sarah says she is going to surprise me with what she wants me to do for the day of the wedding. I wonder what it is?
Day 30
July 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Friday we fly to New York City for the big family weekend to celebrate Aunt Sarah's upcoming wedding. I know there's going to be a big picnic in Central Park. And then the boys are going to go to a Yankee's game while the girls go to the spa to get our nails and hair done. It should really be a lot of fun, and I can't wait!
Day 29
July 27, 2008
Dear Diary, Sundays are fun days. After my dad gets done working in the yard and we get our chores done we usually do something together. Today we're going to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It's a strange name, but it's really a beautiful place. The dunes are made from windblown sand. You can see Glen Lake too. We'll climb the dunes and then have a picnic at the park. Sounds like a great time!
Day 28
July 23, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so hungry. Tonight for dinner Mom made some casserole. I couldn't even tell you what was in it. That's why I didn't eat very much and now I'm starving. I usually have a bowl of cereal for a snack right before bed. Maybe tonight I'll have two bowls.
Day 27
July 22, 2008
Dear Diary, I asked my parents about getting a friend for Buttercup. They kind of smiled and said they would think about it. I think I'm pretty responsible. It wouldn't be a problem for me to have another pet or anything. I take really good care of Buttercup. I just hope they say yes.
Day 26
July 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I think my guinea pig Buttercup is lonely. It's not like Buttercup told me he's lonely. I'm with him everyday, and even take him outside to play in the grass. But I think when I'm gone to school that's a really long time for him to be by himself. I want to ask my parents if I can get another guinea pig so he'll have a friend. Hopefully they'll say yes.
Day 25
July 15, 2008
Dear Diary, Jody, the girl from soccer camp is coming over today. My mom was surprised I wanted to invite her over after the way Jody treated me that first day of camp. But I think Jody wants to be my friend. We're going to practice some soccer moves in the side yard where Alek and I have a goal set up.
Day 24
July 13, 2008
Dear Diary, Since my brother and I were born in Kazakhstan, my mom and dad are trying to help us learn more about our culture. So today we tried to make a traditional Kazakh food. It's called Baursaki, which means fried doughnuts. We made the dough and fried it. I liked mine sprinkled with sugar on top.
Day 23
July 9, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so grossed out right now. Dad and my brother Alek are watching some tv show about insects. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. How they can watch that stuff I'll never know. I think I'm going to work some more on my story so I don't have to think about bugs anymore.
Day 22
July 6, 2008
Dear Diary, What a perfect weekend we had at the Cherry Festival. I had cherry pie, cherry icecream, and of course just plain cherries. They had fun contests and crafts to do. We had a great time. Now I'm just sad that the festival will be ending until next year.
Day 21
July 4, 2008
Dear Diary, It's finally here! Today kicks off the Cherry festival! We're going to go see the air show and the fireworks. Then the rest of the weekend there are competitions and the crowning of the Cherry Queen. What fun we're going to have. I'm going to eat even more cherries than I did last year!
Day 20
June 30, 2008
Dear Diary, One thing I can't stand is bugs. Alek knows I don't like bugs, and yet he tortures me with them. Sometimes he'll sneak up behind me and put one on my shoulder. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Dad says if I stop making a big deal about it, Alek will leave me alone. But it is a big deal!
Day 19
June 27, 2008
Dear Diary, Remember that girl on my soccer team who wasn't being very nice to me? Well, now she says she made a mistake and she wants to be my friend. I was shocked! She said she felt really bad about the things she said to me. And after she got to know me better, she realized we had a lot in common. Her name is Jody.
Day 18
June 25, 2008
Dear Diary, Okay, I was so excited about Aunt Sarah's wedding, but now I feel a little left out. Mom is a bridesmaid. Dad is a groomsman. Even Alek gets to be an usher. But I'm too old to be a flowergirl, and too young to be a bridesmaid. Aunt Sarah says not to worry, she'll find a special job for me. I hope so.
Day 17
June 21, 2008
Dear Diary, Soccer is fun, but I miss t-ball too. That doesn't start again until the fall. Alek will start football after summer. At least that means our family has more time together in the summer. The cherry festival starts in a few weeks, and that's a family tradition.
Day 16
June 18, 2008
Dear Diary, Buttercup and I are hanging out in the front yard. I thought he would run all around, but he doesn't. He just moves a few steps here and there. I guess as long as there's grass to nibble on he's happy.
Day 15
June 16, 2008
Dear Diary, Guess what? I just found out that my Aunt Sarah is getting married! The wedding isn't until October, but there having a family weekend in August to celebrate. That means we get to go to New York City! I've never been there before and am so excited to think about all the fun things to see and do. Why does August have to be so far away?
Day 14
June 13, 2008
Dear Diary, Sometimes girls can be not so nice. There is a girl on my soccer team who said something rude about the way I look. She wanted to know why I don't look like the other girls from our school. And why don't my mom and I look alike. I could feel the tears in my eyes, but I didn't let her see me cry. I just said that we're all special and unique. She just kind of looked at me like I wasn't really there. So many people here are so kind and understanding to Alek and me. But every once in a while I meet someone who uses ugly words. Those people are not worth my time.
Day 13
June 9, 2008
Dear Diary, It feels like forever since I played a soccer game or went to a practice. Finally, it starts this afternoon. The summer league goes all the way until August. That will be awesome! Our team is all girls since we're not in the peewee league anymore. We even have soccer goals set up in the side yard of our house so Alek and I can practice at home too. I wish three o'clock would hurry up and get here, so I could go to practice already.
Day 12
June 6, 2008
Dear Diary, We got them! Mom bought those squirt toys I told you about without telling Dad or Alek. When they went outside after dinner to play catch, we ran around the house and surprised them with a sneak attack. They were soaked with water! We had an all out water battle. It was great fun!
Day 11
June 2, 2008
Dear Diary, My dad is so funny sometimes. He went to the store and bought these foam water toys for my brother and himself. You hold it under the water in a bucket, and then it squirts water when you slide the pieces together. Kind of looks like a pool noodle. Well, then they were squirting my mom and I in the front yard! Mom says she's going to buy a couple for us to use on the boys.
Day 10
May 30, 2008
Dear Diary, We have a big backyard with lots of trees. And since we have no neighbors behind our house, it goes pretty far back. Alek and I like to play back there with our friends. Mom doesn't like us to go too far into the woods where she can't hear us. We play all kinds of games back there. My favorite is hide and seek. There are so many good places to hide!
Day 9
May 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been writing a story that tells about how Alek and I were adopted by our parents. We came to America when we were pretty small, so my mom and dad have helped me a lot. Mom said when I'm finished we can have my story bound into a book. The print shop in town can do it for us. That way we will always have it to remember and share with other people. I think I might even like to include some pictures in the book.
Day 8
May 25, 2008
Dear Diary, We spent the day today at Mackinac Island. We had so much fun hiking the trails. We went really far! My dad even had to carry my brother Alek on his shoulders since he was getting tired. On Mackinac Island, no cars are allowed. Everybody walks or rides in carriages pulled by horses. We rode in a carriage around the island. What a perfect day!
Day 7
May 24, 2008
Dear Diary, This morning I got so scared when I thought I'd lost Buttercup, my guinea pig. I always let her out of her cage when I'm playing in my room. Well, then my dad called me down for breakfast. I totally forgot about Buttercup being out of her cage! When I came back to my room I couldn't find her anywhere. Thank goodness mom found her in my closet, hiding in some laundry!
Day 6
May 22, 2008
Dear Diary, Now that summer is almost here, the cherry blossoms are coming out on the trees. pretty soon it will be time for the cherry festival. I love cherries! Especially when they're made into cherry pie. Cherry season is very beautiful here in Michigan. I have never seen such pretty flowers, and they're everywhere!
Day 5
May 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I love my brother, but sometimes life isn't fair. He had to have his tonsils taken out today. My mom says that when he comes home tomorrow he has to eat popsicles. Why can't I have my tonsils taken out? Oh, and he gets to lay on the couch watching his favorite cartoons too. Maybe I'll ask the doctor to check my tonsils too when we bring him home.
Day 4
May 17, 2008
Dear Diary, My family went to the lake today. Too cold for swimming, but we played frisbee and football. And we brought a picnic lunch and stayed all day. It was a lot of fun except for the dessert. My brother ate all the cookies before I even had one!
Day 3
May 16, 2008
Dear Diary, My guinea pig Buttercup is the best pet in the whole world. She lets me hold her for as long as I want. Right now she is happy nibbling on some lettuce I gave her as a snack. Sometimes at night she wakes me up with those noises she makes. That's okay though, I don't mind. I think it just means she misses me.
Day 2
May 14, 2008
Dear Diary, I am so glad that winter is over! So many days with no sun and lots of snow. Now it will be time to play soccer and t-ball soon. I can hardly wait! Mom says I must be in a growth spurt since my uniform doesn't fit anymore, and my shoes are too tight. I'm already the tallest girl in my class!
Day 1
May 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Someday I want to be a writer. I love to write stories about all kinds of things. It seemed like a good idea to start a journal. Maybe it will help me with my stories. My brother is calling me for dinner, time to go!
