Hannah's Diary

Day 69

November 17, 2008

Dear Diary, My teacher sent home some handwriting worksheets. I don't mind doing homework, but handwriting is not my favorite thing. Probably because I have a hard time with it. It always feels like the other kids in my class are done way before me when we do writing. And I wish my handwriting was neat like Isabelle's. Momma says that's why I need to keep practicing. Well, since Mrs. Braun sent home worksheets it looks like I don't have much choice now.

Day 68

November 14, 2008

Dear Diary, I should be asleep right now, but I just don't feel tired yet. So I'm under my comforter with a flashlight. Maybe it's the full moon. It's so bright in my room it makes it hard to sleep. When I open my eyes I can still see! Uh-oh, I hear someone walking in the hallway, better get to sleep!

Day 67

November 13, 2008

Dear Diary, School was fun today. I actually bought lunch today and usually I just bring my lunch. But today was pizza day, so Momma said it was okay for today. And I had to get the chocolate milk too. Isabelle and I wanted to eat outside, but it's too cold this time of year. And it's snowing too!

Day 66

November 8, 2008

Dear Diary, We were supposed to go into town today, but our car is broken. Momma said the battery died. Now we have to wait until Daddy can get home and fix it. That stinks. Well, I guess I'll try to go do some more work on that puzzle Grandma and I started. It's really hard!

Day 65

November 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma brought home a new puzzle for us to work on. It looks really hard, but I love puzzles. It has postage stamps all over it, so you have to really pay attention to each piece because they all look a lot alike. I think we're going to start it after dinner tonight. I still love having my grandma live with us. I get to see her a lot more than I did before.

Day 64

November 2, 2008

Dear Diary, It's raining outside again. I love the sound of it, and like to open my window so I can feel the wind and hear it even better. At least it didn't rain at Isabelle's house. We had a great time at the party. Isabelle's daddy was telling spooky ghost stories and then her brother tried to scare everybody by sneaking up behind them. I saw him coming though, so it didn't scare me!

Day 63

October 30, 2008

Dear Diary, It's kind of hard to do trick-or-treating when the farms and houses are pretty far apart out here. Usually someone has a big Halloween party and then we do trunk-or-treating. Everyone backs up their cars in a line and sits on the tailgates while the kids go around collecting candy. This year Isabelle's family is having the party since they want to meet more families and moved here not that long ago.

Day 62

October 26, 2008

Dear Diary, Since I got all my chores done on Saturday, I spent the whole day with Patriot today. I feel like I haven't ridden him much lately because I've been so busy with school and getting Lucky settled in. He was stepping all around his stall as soon as he saw me getting his bridle ready. I must be getting taller too, I had to adjust the stirrups a little lower. After we went riding I gave Patriot a bath and got him all cleaned up. I don't think Patriot likes the water as much when it's not hot outside, but we can't have a smelly horse!

Day 61

October 20, 2008

Dear Diary, Whew! I found Lucky right before I went to bed last night. I was so worried, but when I went back down to the barn, there she was. She was walking all around my feet meowing because she was hungry. She must have just wandered off exploring somewhere in the barn or outside. I guess I can understand that, everything is new to Lucky since she's only a kitten.

Day 60

October 19, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm a little worried about Lucky. I went down to the barn before dinner to feed her, and I couldn't find her! Our barn is big, but it isn't huge. How far could she really go? Too bad I can't ask Patriot, since he was right there. I looked all around and called Lucky, but she didn't come. I'm going to check one more time before I go to bed I think. I don't want her to be hungry.

Day 59

October 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle thinks Lucky is such a sweetie. When you hold Lucky, she just curls up in your hands and purrs. After we left Lucky to sleep on a pile of hay, we led Patriot around the fields for a walk. No riding today, we just didn't have time.

Day 58

October 14, 2008

Dear Diary, I asked Momma and Isabelle can come over tomorrow after school. Yipee! I hope Patriot doesn't get jealous with all the attention that Lucky the kitten has been getting. I still love Patriot more than anything, but Lucky needs love too. I think I'll go down and bring Patriot an apple after dinner for a special treat.

Day 57

October 9, 2008

Dear Diary, I told Isabelle all about my kitten Lucky at school. She can't wait to meet him. Hopefully she can come over after school soon. Then instead of getting off at her bus stop, she'll just get off at mine. I'm going to ask Momma.

Day 56

October 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Lucky has a new home! Momma and Daddy said I can keep her as long as she stays in the barn. At first I wasn't happy with that because I wanted her in the house. But then I realized that she can keep Patriot company in the barn. I'm still going to buy her a collar and nametag though, in case she ever gets lost.

Day 55

October 4, 2008

Dear Diary, I think the kitten I found is going to be okay. She's eating more and moving around more now. I've decided to name her Lucky. I'm already begging Momma and Daddy to let me keep her. Keep your fingers crossed, they said "we'll see."

Day 54

October 1, 2008

Dear Diary, Guess what? This morning when I went into the barn, there was this tiny black kitten on the floor of the barn. It was all dirty from the hay. I ran up to the house and got Momma. She said the kitten must be a stray from some wild cat we've seen around. Momma took care of the kitten while I was at school. She's so weak and small that we're feeding her milk from an eyedropper. I hope she'll be okay.

Day 53

September 28, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm sitting here in the barn, right next to Patriot's stall. His new sign we hung above the stall looks perfect. Momma says she can't stand the smell of the hay in the barn, but I love it! This is my favorite place to be, especially when it's raining like today. Not a thunderstorm, but just a rain storm. You can hear the raindrops hitting the roof, I like that.

Day 52

September 27, 2008

Dear Diary, Sometimes I'm kind of clumsy. It seems like I'm always spilling something, especially milk at the dinner table. Afterschool I was drinking a sports drink and walking around with it, and it spilled. Momma gave me that look and said to sit at the table with it. Well, two seconds later I spilled a lot more as I was sitting down. Oops!

Day 51

September 25, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma said she was tired of seeing my bangs hanging down in my eyes. As soon as I came in after school she asked me to sit down and went and got her scissors. I guess they were getting kind of long. Now I don't have to keep brushing them out of my eyes. It's funny how I didn't even notice it before.

Day 50

September 21, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy came home with a surprise for me today. Or maybe I should say a surprise for Patriot. It's a wooden sign for above Patriot's stall that's engraved with his name. It's perfect! And Daddy even had them put a horseshoe on either side of Patriot's name. We're going to hang it up after supper.

Day 49

September 18, 2008

Dear Diary, People always ask me why I named my horse Patriot. That's easy! He was born on the Fourth of July. It seemed like the perfect name to me. The farmer we bought him from just called him "Hank", and that sounded kind of boring to me. I think Patriot suits him much better.

Day 48

September 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Mrs. Hudson is a funny lady. She taught us this song today to remember the most common helping verbs. It works! "Am, as, are, was, were, have, has, had, be, being, been..." The only problem is that now that tune is stuck in my head! At least I can remember them now though.

Day 47

September 11, 2008

Dear Diary, Mrs. Hudson held me back from lunch for a few minutes to talk to me. I was really nervous. She said she knows I'm having a hard to participating in the group assignments, but that she wants me to keep trying. Group projects are part of my class grades. I told her I will try.

Day 46

September 8, 2008

Dear Diary, In class Mrs. Hudson had us split up into groups of four to work on our social studies lesson. I usually like working by myself better. Anytime there's a group assignment I feel like I sit there and don't say anything. The other kids all share their ideas and I just freeze inside when they look at me for my turn. I feel bad. It's not like I don't want to help, it's just hard when you're a little shy.

Day 45

September 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma and I worked on a puzzle and then I went riding. She loves to sit on the front porch and watch me gallop around on Patriot. She said I remind her of herself when she was a little girl. After I was done, Grandma gave Patriot a big red apple. I think she likes to spoil my horse just like she spoils me.

Day 44

September 2, 2008

Dear Diary, Today was my first day back at school. I was so excited to see Isabelle sitting in my class already. I picked the desk right next to hers. The teacher, Mrs. Hudson, said we can pick where we sit, and as long as we don't talk too much then we can stay in that desk. That's going to be hard I bet, but I really like sitting next to Isabelle. Our teacher Mrs. Hudson is really funny. She likes to sing in the middle of class!

Day 43

August 30, 2008

Dear Diary, I spent most of the day today down at the barn. I know it's time to get ready for school to start. I'm just a little sad that with school starting I won't be able to spend as much time with Patriot. Of course, I'll see him before school when I feed him his breakfast, but then I'll have to wait until late in the afternoon when the bus drops me off. Hopefully he won't miss me too bad.

Day 42

August 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Yuck! Momma and Grandma were drinking coffee this morning after breakfast. I felt kind of left out, so I asked them if I could have a cup too. Momma gave me a small mug with a smile and said, "it's really for grown-ups sweetie, but you can try it." I had only one sip, and that was plenty. I'm not sure why grown-ups drink that stuff anyway. I think I'll stick to juice in the morning.

Day 41

August 24, 2008

Dear Diary, It's so nice to sleep in peace and quiet again. "Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse." Ha, ha. Daddy finally caught the little cheese eater and put him out by the barn where the other mice are. I'm just relieved to know what was making that squeaking sound. I was starting to think I was hearing things!

Day 40

August 21, 2008

Dear Diary, A mouse! That's what was making that squeaking noise at night in the hallway! Momma said she saw it run into the spare room when she was in the hall this morning. I love animals and all, but a mouse? I'm more of a horse girl. Daddy says he'll try to catch it tonight. I asked him if he could please catch it without hurting it and set it free outside. Even though I don't like mice there's no reason he can't live outside. He said he'd try.

Day 39

August 18, 2008

Dear Diary, The squeaking noise at night is starting to really bother me. I asked Grandma this morning if she heard it since her room is right across the hall from mine. She said no because she takes her hearing aid out at night to sleep. I must be hearing things. But now, even when I don't hear the squeaking, I feel like I'm laying there waiting to hear it.

Day 38

August 16, 2008

Dear Diary, The book I'm reading right now is really good, it's a mystery. Not really a scarey book, but one where you have to follow the clues to try to figure solve the mystery. Anyways, last night I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking I heard a squeaking noise in the hallway. When I looked outside my door I didn't see anything though. But then again, it was dark in the hallway, and I couldn't see much of anything anyway.

Day 37

August 12, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm so bored. I don't have any books left to read now. I just finished my last chapter book. Momma said maybe we can go into town in a couple days to check out a few more books from the library. Then she said why don't I just read one of them over again. It's just not the same when you already know how the story ends, but I guess that's what I'll have to do for now.

Day 36

August 9, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I had the best time at her house. We dressed up in all our different clothes. She and I are the same size so we traded outfits too. Then we put on music and danced all around. Next time I'm going to invite Isabelle to my house.

Day 35

August 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Momma said that as soon as my chores are done I can go over to Isabelle's house to play. I'm going to bring my dress-up clothes and we're going to have a fashion show. I have them already packed in my princess bag. So I guess that means I better finish up. I already fed and watered Patriot. Now I have to sort my laundry and clean my room.

Day 34

August 1, 2008

Dear Diary, I spent all afternoon down at the barn with Patriot. He loves when I bring him apples for a treat. Sometimes I bring a book I'm reading down to the barn and read to him. But today I was busy cleaning the stall and brushing him. Daddy says he can always tell when I've spent the day in the barn because I come inside smelling like the barn.

Day 33

July 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Last night Momma and Daddy went out to dinner and a movie. So Grandma and I stayed up late having fun. Grandma puts curlers in her hair to make it all wavey the next day. So I asked her to put my hair in curlers too. It looked really funny in rollers, but now today my hair is all wavey. I kind of like it like this, but not enough to put rollers in my hair every night before bed.

Day 32

July 25, 2008

Dear Diary, It's so nice having my grandma here all the time. When I wake up in the morning she's always making breakfast, like homemade biscuits or pancakes. And since there's no school right now, we get to spend a lot of time together. We read books and play games. I love to play Sorry. Grandma always laughs when I send her guy back to start.

Day 31

July 23, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I have been working on this really big puzzle. It's 500 pieces! I've never done one that big before, but if Isabelle and I do it together I think we can finish it. Of course it's a puzzle with horses. There's a momma horse and her baby, a foal.

Day 30

July 18, 2008

Dear Diary, There's this song I keep hearing on the radio that I just love! It's by that guy that won American Idol this year. It's such an awesome song and it just gets stuck in my head. My momma just smiles when she hears me walking through the house singing it. Grandma just says "What's American Idol?" when Momma tells her the song. I love American Idol! Maybe they should make a snow globe!

Day 29

July 14, 2008

Dear Diary, We made it back from Grandma's. It was hard going through everything in her house to see what the floods hadn't ruined. But luckily her pictures were okay. So we boxed up what we could and brought it all back to the farm. I'm so happy to be back. I missed Patriot! And after seeing what the floods did to so many homes, I know how lucky we are to have the farm and each other.

Day 28

July 11, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma's place is a few hours away, so we're driving in our truck to get there. Momma and Grandma are pretty quiet. We've seen the pictures on tv about what the area looks like, but I know that seeing it in person will be very different. The community is really coming together and helping each other. At least that's one good thing.

Day 27

July 10, 2008

Dear Diary, Momma and I are going with Grandma back to her house. Grandma wants to see what things in the house weren't ruined by the floods. She's still going to be staying with us, so we'll be bringing her things back to our farm. I think Grandma is mostly hoping that her family pictures and sentimental things are okay. We're leaving tomorrow.

Day 26

July 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Our bbq with Isabelle's family was a big success! Our mommas talked like they were old friends with Grandma. Daddy showed Isabelle's dad around the farm. And Isabelle met Patriot. I think she was a little shy around him at first, almost like she was scared. But when she saw how gentle he was, she helped me brush him. What a great day we had!

Day 25

July 4, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and her family are coming over for a bbq today. Since they just moved here, they really don't know anybody yet. I think it was really sweet of my momma to think of them. I can't wait for Isabelle to meet Patriot! Better go, I have to help Momma make potato salad and all the other yummy stuff.

Day 24

July 1, 2008

Dear Diary, Now that Grandma has seen Patriot, she agrees he's the prettiest horse ever. She watches me ride him around the field, clapping her hands when I make him trot. It already feels like I've had Patriot forever. It's hard to remember he's only been my horse for a few months.

Day 23

June 29, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy came home yesterday. We were so glad! He said he helped as much as he could, but that it was time to come back home. Grandma and Momma made his favorite ham dinner too.

Day 22

June 24, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy is going over to the next town to help. He says he can help with more sandbags, or whatever else they need. He and some other people from our town are taking a big truck over with lots of bottled water and food. It doesn't seem like enough, but every little bit helps he says. I'll miss him while he's gone, but he says he'll be back in a few days.

Day 21

June 21, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm having a good time with my grandma here even though the floods are still going on. We try not to talk about it too much. Every night we sit in the kitchen. And she brushes my hair while she talks to Momma and Daddy. It feels so soft to have her brush my hair. She's been doing it ever since I was a little girl. She says her hair used to be the exact same color when she was younger.

Day 20

June 19, 2008

Dear Diary, My Grandma may be staying with us for a while. Her neighbor called last night to say that their town had been evacuated. The whole area is flooded since the levee broke. It made me so sad to see Grandma cry. She's lived in that house since she married my Grandpa. And now it's flooded. It's kinda scarey to see the flood reports on the tv. All this muddy water everywhere you look. Momma and Daddy say we're safe where we are.

Day 19

June 17, 2008

Dear Diary, When my Grandma came today for her visit, I was so happy to see her! But I have to admit that I was excited to see what she brought me in her bag too. When I opened the box, I saw a beautiful Cinderella snowglobe! I've been wanting a Cinderella one for a while. I gave her a huge hug and said thank you a million times. I know just the place to put it on my shelf. It even plays music!

Day 18

June 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma's coming tomorrow! I'm not sure how long she can stay. Hopefully for a long time. And when I talked to her on the phone last night, she said she has a surprise for me! A snow globe? I hope so. But I am just very excited for her to come. Grandma makes chocolate pudding from scratch, and it's the best ever!

Day 17

June 12, 2008

Dear Diary, One of my least favorite chores is laundry. But that's one thing that's never ending around our farm. It seems like just by the time Momma and I finish the last load, it's time to start all over again. Momma says it's just one of those things that has to be done no matter how much you compain about it. Guess I better go get started.

Day 16

June 9, 2008

Dear Diary, I overslept this morning. And Patriot was getting impatient for breakfast by the time I got to the barn. He kept leaning his head over his stall door nudging my shoulder with his head while I was filling the feed bucket. Horses never sleep in, not on weekends, and not on summer vacation I guess.

Day 15

June 5, 2008

Dear Diary, Usually in the summer I go stay with my grandma. She only lives a few hours away. But now that I have Patriot I don't want to leave him. My grandma said she can come stay here instead! Wait till she sees Patriot! And usually when I visit Grandma, she gives me a new princess snow globe to add to my collection. So far I have 7 of them. I hope she remembers!

Day 14

June 3, 2008

Dear Diary, One of the coolest things about living on a farm is having so much room to play. I can play in the barn, or run around through the fields. Mom says as long as I stay inside our fence I can go wherever I want. Once my homework is done, I like to go outside and play till I get called in for dinner. Sometimes I just walk Patriot around. I hope the other horses don't get jealous of how much attention I give Patriot. But Patriot is my very own horse. The other two horses my dad uses to work our farm.

Day 13

May 31, 2008

Dear Diary, My daddy's birthday is today. I colored him a pretty picture for his office. I hope he likes it. It's a picture of our family in front of our house. I even drew Patriot next to us since he's part of our family now too. I also bough him a big bag of pistachios since those are his favorite.

Day 12

May 29, 2008

Dear Diary, James put a frog in the teacher's desk today in school! She was busy writing on the board when he did it. After a few minutes the frog started croaking. I tried so hard not to laugh. But even our teacher Mrs. Johnson started laughing! She made James take the frog outside. Then he had to stay inside during recess to clean the desks.

Day 11

May 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Only a couple more weeks of school! Our class is going on an end of the year fieldtrip to Adventureland Amusement Park! There's so many cool rides and shows to see. I just hope the new water playland area is open. It's supposed to have water slides and tunnels and other fun stuff.

Day 10

May 26, 2008

Dear Diary, There is no school today because it's Memorial Day. My Mom says after we're through with our chores we can go into town. I like to do chores like clean up the barn. That way I can be with Patriot. The ther fun thing about the barn is jumping down into the mound of hay!

Day 9

May 23, 2008

Dear Diary, It's Friday! That means we get to have breakfast for dinner tonight. Usually Daddy and I make homemade biscuits or waffles. I like when we make waffles best because we put chocolate chips in them! After dinner we like to sit out on our front porch swing and watch the sun go down. It's amazing how many stars you can see when it gets dark.

Day 8

May 20, 2008

Dear Diary, Guess what? Isabelle likes horses too! She doesn't have a horse. I told her maybe she can come see Patriot at our farm. Isabelle does have a collection of horse pictures and stuffed animals and other cool stuff. I think I'll take a picture of patriot for Isabelle to add to her collection!

Day 7

May 19, 2008

Dear Diary, There is a new girl in my class. Her name is Isabelle and she just moved here from Florida. We sat together at lunchtime. I think she is very nice. Maybe we can play together tomorrow at recess.

Day 6

May 15, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm pretty good at doing puzzles. My Dad taught me how to sort the pieces before I start. Then I like to do the edges first. The biggest puzzle I ever did was 300 pieces! Of course, my Dad helped me with it.

Day 5

May 13, 2008

Dear Diary, I had fun at school today. Tuesday is library day, and I love checking out new books. I really love chapter books. Sometimes I take my books to the barn and read to Patriot. Not sure if he's listening or not.

Day 4

May 11, 2008

Dear Diary, I know I haven't written in a while. I try to spend all my time with Patriot. He is the sweetest horse. They are a lot of work. Feeding him before my breakfast. Then I have to clean his stall. I like to brush him every day. I think he likes it too.

Day 2

March 21, 2008

Dear Diary, You will never guess what happened. I actually got my horse today!! I think it was the good luck the doves gave me! Anyway, his name is Patriot and he limps because he had a broken leg when he was a colt, and it never healed properly. He is the sweetest horse ever!

Day 1

March 18, 2008

Dear Diary,

A couple of days ago, we had the strangest thing happen on our farm. There were 2 white doves sitting on our barn. I know that means good luck so I was wishing for a horse. The horse I want is tan and beautiful and I saw it on a horse farm. The reason I want this particular horse is because it rides with a limp and I feel so bad for it.
