Hannah's Diary

Day 161

March 14, 2010

Dear Diary, Everybody's worried because the rivers are getting so high again. It seems like this happens a lot lately. All the rain is just making it worse. Daddy's worried we wont be able to go into town much longer, so he went to get supplies in case we're stuck out here for awhile.

Day 160

March 13, 2010

Dear Diary, I want to ride Patriot, but it's been raining so much lately. If it was summer  I could ride him in the rain, but not now. I think I'll go down to the barn and brush him and bring him some treats. Daddy says we have to clip Patriot's hooves tomorrow.

Day 159

March 7, 2010

Dear Diary, I'm almost finished with my robot creation. I did need Daddy's help for the arms, but the rest I did all by myself. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. And it's not due until Friday, so at least I'll have it all done early.

Day 158

March 5, 2010

Dear Diary, Mr Gantt just gave us a really cool project to work on. We have to make a robot using all geometric shapes. I know it will be hard, but I think I can do it. Daddy said he'd help me start it tonight if I want help. I think I'll try to do it myself and then let him help if I get stuck.

Day 157

February 28, 2010

Dear Diary, February seemed so short. I still don't understand this whole leap year thing. Anyways, tomorrow will be March. That means it'll be spring break soon! Yipee!

Day 156

February 21, 2010

Dear Diary, Momma framed my certificate from the art exhibit the other night. I think it looks good over my bed. I never thought I'd get an award for something in art. Maybe I should join the art club or something...

Day 155

February 17, 2010

Dear Diary, Tonight was the art exhibit. It was kind of cool seeing my own drawing all in a pretty frame in the hall. My parents and Grandma were there with me too. They were so happy for me when I got my ribbon. I felt kind of proud of myself too.

Day 154

February 12, 2010

Dear Diary, My parents had a conference with my teacher. All the kids parents have to have them two times a year. The only bad thing that came up was my handwriting, as always. I'm trying so hard, but it's like my letters just don't want to come out of my pencil right. My teacher says she knows I'm trying and that I just need to do more practice. Okay, okay. She gave Momma a workbook with practice for me to use.

Day 153

February 9, 2010

Dear Diary, Some kids in my class were making fun of Isabelle because they didn't like her outfit. That makes no sense. Who cares what you're wearing? I felt really bad for Isabelle, so I just told her to ignore them. I think she was really upset. I guess I would be too. It's not nice when people make fun of you like that.

Day 152

February 2, 2010

Dear Diary, Mr. Gantt thinks one of my drawings might be good enough for the district contest. I've never thought I was a good artist, but I guess maybe I did okay. We get to go to the main office for the art show and then they'll announce the winners. It's in 2 weeks.

Day 151

January 28, 2010

Dear Diary, I was looking in my closet, and I have a whole shelf full of puzzles I've done. I don't really know what to do with them. Once I've done them, I don't usually do the same one again. It seems to easy the second time. Maybe I can trade puzzles with Isabelle.

Day 150

January 23, 2010

Dear Diary, Momma tried to make pizza tonight. It's just not the same as when we go for pizza in town. The crust was too mushy. I felt bad because I know she was excited to try making one, but I think she knew it wasn't as good either. You should have seen her face after she took a bite.

Day 149

January 21, 2010

Dear Diary, I want to go to sleep, but I can't. One of my dad's friends is here working on the toilet in my bathroom, and it's really noisey. There's no way I can sleep until they're done. I'm so tired...

Day 148

January 15, 2010

Dear Diary, I was eating popcorn for a snack, and Lucky came over and started eating right out of the bowl, like it was for her! I didn't know cats liked popcorn. She didn't eat a lot, because then she was batting it around like a toy, all over my bed. Too funny!

Day 147

January 8, 2010

Dear Diary, I have this soundtrack from a movie I love called "The Wild". The movie was so sweet, and I love the music too. Lately that's all I've been listening to. I keep thinking I'll get tired of it, but that hasn't happened yet.

Day 146

January 4, 2010

Dear Diary, I was feeding Patriot some Cheerios today, and he tried to stick his whole muzzle into the box of cereal! I guess that means he really, really likes them. Daddy says to just not give him too many, it's more of a treat then food. Sounds like Momma telling me I can have a little dessert after dinner, but not too much.

Day 145

December 30, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma said since there's no school I can have Isabelle come stay the night tomorrow for New Year's Eve. We're going to drink cider and eat popcorn. I hope we can stay awake until midnight!

Day 144

December 28, 2009

Dear Diary, Patriot and I went for a short ride today. It started snowing pretty hard, and I couldn't see very good. I wasn't worried I'd get lost or anything, but we went back into the barn. I read one of my books out loud to Patriot. I think he likes hearing me read.

Day 143

December 19, 2009

Dear Diary, No more school until 2010! That sounds really weird, doesn't it? I have to help my daddy today. It's time to get the animals all ready for winter. We have to change the horseshoes and all that fun stuff. We've already had a couple of bad snowstorms.  Time to get to the barn!

Day 142

December 15, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle's mom just painted Isabelle's room. It's sooo pretty! It's pink with flowers on the curtains and everything. I wish I could do my room. It's just plain white walls, and no flowers. Isabelle's so lucky!

Day 141

December 7, 2009

Dear Diary, Well, Patriot seems fine now, but I have a really bad cold! My head hurts and I have a fever, so no school today. Probably no school tomorrow too. I miss school. It's no fun being stuck at home and not seeing your friends. Isabelle called to see why I wasn't at school. Isabelle is a really good best friend.

Day 140

December 2, 2009

Dear Diary, I brought Patriot a big juicy apple for a treat, but he didn't want it. That's never happened before. Maybe he feels sick or something. Do horses get colds and stuff? I don't really know. I think I'll go check on him again after I do my homework. Time for math-

Day 139

November 30, 2009

Dear Diary, I love this time of year. I feel like I have so much to be thankful for. I have a family, and friends, and a nice school. And how can I forget Patriot and Lucky! We just did an assignment for school about what we're thankful for, and it just made me think that I really am thankful for a lot.

Day 138

November 22, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma was so mad at me! I helped with the laundry, and it was my job to check all the pants pockets before I put them in the washing machine. I guess I forgot a few, and one of my pants had my favorite red pen in the pocket. It got all over everything! I could just tell by the look on Momma's face that she was not happy. Sorry Momma!

Day 137

November 16, 2009

Dear Diary, Daddy's all happy because he got a new tractor today. I think it looks just like the old one, except the paint is shiney. It's green, just like the other one was. He said it's pretty fast though. After dinner he said he'll take me for a ride. I wish I could drive, but I doubt it.

Day 136

November 14, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma said I have to help with the wash before I can go play. I think the worst is sorting the laundry when it's done. I can never match up all the socks. And it's just not a fun thing to do. I'd rather go muck the stalls in the barn or something, anything but laundry!

Day 135

November 5, 2009

Dear Diary, Now that Lucky isn't a kitten anymore, she doesn't seem to need me so much. She used to follow me everywhere, and now I have to go look for her myself. I'm thinking of putting a bell on her collar to make it easier. She must have some really good hiding spots.

Day 134

November 2, 2009

Dear Diary, Meatball subs? That's what we're having for dinner. I don't think we've ever eaten something like that before. My parents just don't do Italian food. Momma said she saw it on some cooking show, and wanted to try it. Okay Momma, whatever you say.

Day 133

October 27, 2009

Dear Diary, Since Halloween is on a Saturday this year I'm going to spend the night at Isabelle's house. Doesn't that sound like fun? She wants to make our own haunted house and see if we can scare each other. I don't scare very easily, but it should be fun.

Day 132

October 22, 2009

Dear Diary, Grandma's been in the kitchen all afternoon getting dinner ready, and it smells delicious. She said I can help make the spoonbread when she's ready. I love Grandma's spoonbread, it tastes just like pumpkin pie. I think I'll go make sure she didn't start without me-

Day 131

October 20, 2009

Dear Diary, Sunday we went to the pumpkin patch. It's always so much fun to go on the hayrides and do the big mazes. There were lots of other kids there too. Daddy picked out the biggest pumpkin I think we've ever had. I picked out another small one too.

Day 130

October 11, 2009

Dear Diary, Can you believe that the weather guy is already talking about possible snow? Where did the summer go? It's only October. That means pretty soon we'll have to change Patriot's feed and horseshoes. I should ask Daddy about that.

Day 129

October 7, 2009

Dear Diary, Sunday is our fall festival. There's always games and contests. I don't do any of the contests, I just play the games for fun. It's kind of like a carnival, a really small one, but we always have a good time.

Day 128

October 1, 2009

Dear Diary, Patriot's such a good horse. When I come in the barn, he's always leaning over his stall, waiting for me. I'm not sure if he's waiting for me, or the treats I always bring him! We had a good ride this afternoon. We walked along the back of our farm near the creek. Time for supper-

Day 127

September 24, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma must be in another painting mood. All the doors are missing from my room, even the closet door. She said they needed new paint. I don't think so, but okay Momma. It just feels weird not having a door to shut when I'm in my room. She said she'll be done by tomorrow. How am I going to sleep tonight?

Day 126

September 17, 2009

Dear Diary, Our class went to the library this morning, but I could not decide what I wanted to check out to read. I'm kind of picky about my books. I love to read, but only certain books, like right now mysteries are my favorite. I hope Mr. Gantt lets us go back tomorrow so I can get a book, I ran out of time today-

Day 125

September 14, 2009

Dear Diary, We went into town to go shopping, and I can't believe all the Halloween doecorations already. It's not even October yet. I asked Momma if we were going to have another Halloween party, and she said maybe we can. I love making caramel apples. They're super sticky, but really good-

Day 124

September 4, 2009

Dear Diary, Sometimes I hear a song on a tv commercial, and then I can't get it out of my head! And it's really annoying when it's a song you don't even like. I keep trying to think of something else, but it's not working. Uggh!

Day 123

September 1, 2009

Dear Diary, Yesterday was the first day of school, and it was pretty good. Isabelle and I have our desks right next to each other. I know Mr. Gantt said we have to do our work and not talk too much, but it's hard when you get to sit next to your best friend. My mom wrote a little note in my lunchbox. It said, "I love you, and hope you have a great first day at school." She always does stuff like that.

Day 122

August 26, 2009

Dear Diary, We're in the same class again!!! I'm so happy! My teacher is Mr. Gantt, and he said that on the first day of school he'll let us pick where we sit. I'm going to sit next to Isabelle. But if we want to keep our seat, then we have to do our work and not talk too much, or Mr. Gantt said he'd move us. I can do that!

Day 121

August 24, 2009

Dear Diary, Tomorrow is the open house at my school. We get to go and meet my new teacher and see what kids will be in my class. I really hope Isabelle is in my class again! I'll be really sad if she's not-

Day 120

August 17, 2009

Dear Diary, We went to the fair yesterday, and Isabelle came with us. She's never been to the fair before. We stayed all day until it was dark. I think the best was the double ferris wheel. It was a little scarey at first because you're up so high, but Isabelle and I went on together, so that made it easier. And yes, we had to take our picture with the cow made from butter!

Day 119

August 13, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma made me sit down and practice my handwriting before I was allowed to go play down at the barn. I know I need to practice, but it's summer, and there are so many better things to do. She said I could write about anything I wanted, so I wrote about Patriot. I told about how we got him last year, and about how he loves to eat cheerios and apples. It's more fun to write about something you love-

Day 118

August 9, 2009

Dear Diary, The Iowa State Fair is coming next week. They have so much to do there, like truck and tractor pulls, music, and they even have butter sculptures. I know it sounds a little weird, but it's kind of neat. I wonder if my parents will let Isabelle come with us?

Day 117

August 3, 2009

Dear Diary, Daddy and Momma want to go to the farmers' market. Usually in the summer we go look for the biggest, best watermelons we can find. I love melon! Better hurry up and finish my chores so we can go-

Day 116

July 29, 2009

Dear Diary, I found a new treat that Patriot likes, Cheerios! I kind of found out by accident, since I brought a little baggie full of them to the barn for a snack. I could tell Patriot thought I brought them for him, and he wanted some. So, I gave him a few and he ate almost the whole bag! I guess next time I'll have to bring two bags, one for Patriot, and one for me-

Day 115

July 23, 2009

Dear Diary, School starts in one more month. I'm kind of happy about it since I like school, but I like getting to hang out all day with Patriot and my cat Lucky too. And I know I'll get to see Isabelle more than I do now. We talk on the phone everyday, but in school we eat lunch together, and play on the playground together. That's even better-

Day 114

July 13, 2009

Dear Diary, I hate when you have a puzzle that's missing pieces. It's just no fun when you put it together because it feels like it's not finished. Momma bought it at a yard sale for a quarter. Maybe that's why it was only a quarter, because it didn't have all the pieces!

Day 113

July 8, 2009

Dear Diary, We spent most of the day in town. Grandma had a couple of doctor's appointments to go to, and Momma needed to run some errands. Nothing exciting, the bank, the feed store, stuff like that. I was hoping to ride Patriot, but I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Day 112

July 1, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle came over and we were looking for something to do. My momma said we should have a sponge relay race, which I've never heard of. She set up three buckets. One big one full of water with two big kitchen sponges in it, and then two smaller empty buckets. When she said go, Isabelle and I had to race to see who could fill up their empty bucket the fastest using the kitchen sponge with water from the one big bucket. It was actually a lot of fun!

Day 111

June 27, 2009

Dear Diary, Grandma helped me work on that critter door hanger again today and now I'm almost finished with it! I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. I just have to finish stitching the front and back pieces together, and then I can stuff it. It's a cute little frog I'm going to hang on the door of my bedroom.

Day 110

June 22, 2009

Dear Diary, Laundry day, yuck. I wish all my clothes would magically wash, dry and them put themselves away. Instead, I'm folding them myself on my bed while Lucky rolls around in the pile chasing his tale. At least when I'm finished I can go ride Patriot, that makes it worth it!

Day 109

June 14, 2009

Dear Diary, Sewing is a lot harder than it looks! I had a hard time getting by hands to work together with the needle and yarn. Grandma says it takes practice and that she'll help me next time. I had to take out all the stitches I did because they didn't look right. I'm thinking it will be more fun once I learn how to do it!

Day 108

June 13, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma went into town and came home with all these craft kits. She said she thought they would be fun for me. One is a sewing kit where you can make your own mini stuffed animal by sewing the felt pieces together and then stuffing it. I've never done one before, but it might be fun.

Day 107

June 7, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle is going to spend the night tonight. I love summer, you can have sleepovers any night, and not just on the weekends. We're going to go riding. I can ride one of Daddy's horses, and let Isabelle ride Patriot. Patriot is very gentle, and since Isabelle isn't used to riding that's good for her.

Day 106

June 4, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma was asking me if I want to get my hair cut. She doesn't just mean a trim either, she means like chopped off. So I like to wear a ponytail all the time, that doesn't mean I want my hair to be short. I like that I can wear it up when I want to, and down when I want to.

Day 105

May 31, 2009

Dear Diary, I helped Daddy paint the side of the barn. It's actually kind of fun painting because it's not like I ever get to paint anything but pictures in art. We were talking and singing songs while we were out there. Grandma came outside and watched us too. I'm not sure if that was considered a chore since it was fun!

Day 104

May 26, 2009

Dear Diary, Our teacher had us helping to clean up the classroom in school. We had to go through all the puzzles and find any missing pieces. Then we helped take down the word wall. Not my idea of fun, but it's not like it was hard work or anything. Only one more week of school! Mrs. Braun hasn't said if we're having a class party or not. I hope so!

Day 103

May 17, 2009

Dear Diary, I can't wait to go canoeing again! We had such a good time! Daddy would try to rock the canoe, but it didn't scare me, it just made me laugh. Momma brough sandwiches, and we just stopped along the edge of the river for lunch. We were gone all day, but to me it went by really fast. Daddy said maybe we can go again after school gets out. Yeah!

Day 102

May 13, 2009

Dear Diary, We're going to go canoeing next weekend! I've never been canoeing before, but Momma and Daddy thought it would be fun. I asked Grandma, but she said she doesn't know how to swim, so she'll stay home. I'm sure Lucky will keep her company while were gone.

Day 101

May 7, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I were playing in my room, and that's how it happened. One of my snowglobes fell off the dresser and smashed. It wasn't my favorite one, but I still liked the one with the polar bears in it. I'm just relieved it wasn't the princess one, or the horse one. Isabelle felt so bad and wanted to fix it, but once the glass is broken you can't fix it. It's okay, I know she didn't mean to do it.

Day 100

May 2, 2009

Dear Diary, Patriot and I were riding most of the morning. Grandma had to beg me to stop and have lunch. She said I'm just like my momma when she was a little girl. Always out adventuring, too busy to stop and eat. I can't help it. Now that warm weather is here, all I want to do is ride!

Day 99

April 30, 2009

Dear Diary, I missed the bus to school this morning! Momma was not happy about having to drive me all the way to school. I guess I just got distracted playing in the barn. Then when I heard Momma yelling from the porch I knew I was late. Oops!

Day 98

April 22, 2009

Dear Diary, You know, Isabelle hasn't lived here as long as I have, but she's made so many friends already. I wish I could talk to kids easier like she does. It's just so hard for me. I can't help that I'm so quiet. Maybe if I keep hanging out with her it will rub off on me!

Day 97

April 19, 2009

Dear Diary, Yeah! School starts again tomorrow, and I can't wait! I'm going to show Mrs. Braun some of the pages I did in my coloring book. Isabelle finally got her cast off her foot, so she won't need me to carry her books for her or push her in the wheelchair anymore. I didn't mind, but I'm glad we'll be able to run around on the playground again.

Day 96

April 12, 2009

Dear Diary, Tomorrow is the first day of spring break. I guess that's okay, but I really like school. Well, except for the handwriting! I get to see my friends more at school than when I'm at home. We don't live in a neighborhood. Out here it's all farms, and there's a lot of space between them. At least I have Patriot and Lucky to keep me company.

Day 95

April 8, 2009

Dear Diary, I'm tired! I just gave Patriot a real good brushing and cleaned his hooves. It's a lot of work taking care of a horse, but he looks so much better now. And then I had to muck his stall too. I swear Patriot smiles at me when I clean his stall, like it makes him happy. What a sweet horse he is!

Day 94

April 3, 2009

Dear Diary, I love my kitten's name, but I'm wondering if I should have named him Mittens. He's all black except for his paws and the tip of his tail. They're white. But I really do like the name Lucky since we weren't sure he'd survive being so little when he lost his momma. Maybe Mittens can be his middle name!

Day 93

March 31, 2009

Dear Diary, Grandma gave me something new to try. It's some kind of a sewing kit. They give you a plastic sheet with a pattern marked on it, and you have to sew the stitches in different colors. When you're all finished it makes a picture. This one has a rainbow and flowers on it.

Day 92

March 23, 2009

Dear Diary, Mom had me practicing my handwriting this weekend. My teacher also sent home a fun way to practice my handwriting. She sent home a coloring book that's all horses! I thought it sounded strange that coloring would help my handwriting, but Mrs. Braun says it helps something called "fine motor". Sounds good to me!

Day 91

March 20, 2009

Dear Diary, Today is the first day of spring! It's already getting warmer, and that means pretty soon I can start being outside more. That's where I really like to be, especially with Patriot. Momma always says I'm an outdoors girl, and I think that's a good thing.

Day 90

March 11, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle broke her foot! She said she did it jumping down off her bunk bed. Now she has to wear a cast for like the next month. And when she's in school she either has to hobble around or use the wheelchair from the clinic. I've been helping her as much as I can, carrying her books and her lunch tray.

Day 89

March 7, 2009

Dear Diary, Lucky keeps following me around this afternoon. Everywhere I go, there he is purring and meowing and rubbing against my legs. It's not like I don't already give him a lot of attention. Oh, and I finally bought him a cute little red collar with a tiny bell on it. It's so cute to hear his bell as he goes running around the house.

Day 88

March 1, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I had a lot of fun at our sleepover the other night. We didn't even start the puzzle Momma brought home, maybe next time. We actually hung out with my Grandma a lot. We baked brownies together and then put frosting all over them. Delicious! Isabelle says I'm lucky to have such a cool grandma who actually lives with us. I know-

Day 87

February 27, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle is coming over to spend the night tomorrow. I think it will be a lot of fun. Mom bought us a new puzzle to try. It has like 1,000 pieces! I can't wait for her to see how big my kitten Lucky has gotten too.

Day 86

February 24, 2009

Dear Diary, I felt bad for Isabelle in school today. Some boy just ran right into her and knocked her books out of her hands. I think it was an accident, but then he was really rude about it. He started yelling at her like it was her fault he ran into her. Isabelle looked like she wanted to cry, but she didn't. Some kids can be so mean.

Day 85

February 22, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma and I are going into town today. She needs to run some errands I guess. During the winter you kind have to go when the weather is good, like today You never know when the next snowstorm will be. Then sometimes you can't get into town.

Day 84

February 17, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle came over yesterday and we hung out with Patriot in the barn. She loves to help me brush him down. I think Isabelle wishes she had a horse too, but I told her that she can come ride Patriot anytime she wants to. She said she loves horses, but she's never ridden one before. I can't wait for her to try!

Day 83

February 8, 2009

Dear Diary, Grandma is trying to teach me how to knit. It's not going so well. All my stitches come out loose and none of them even look the same. Grandma says it takes lots of practice. I'm not sure I have that much patience. I wanted to knit a scarf.

Day 82

February 2, 2009

Dear Diary, We've been busy in the barn. In the winter you have to try to help the animals stay warm. That means warming their water so they'll drink. Feeding them extra hay and grains. Too bad I can't Patriot into the house like we did Lucky. Lucky's all nice and warm cozied up on my bed. Well, off to finish my homework-I have spelling words to practice.

Day 81

January 28, 2009

Dear Diary, Isabelle came over after school. We just kind of hung out in my room. Sometimes she brings her book and we'll just sit there and read together. Mom made us popcorn to snack on. I'm so glad Isabelle moved here. Now that we're best friends, I can't imagine her not being here-

Day 80

January 20, 2009

Dear Diary, I'm going to ride Patriot this afternoon when I get home from school. It's cold, but not snowing. I haven't ridden him as much lately. And then I'll give him a good brush down when we're all done. I think Patriot likes to get brushed. He always nuzzles me while I brush him like he wants me to keep going. It must feel like a massage or something.

Day 79

January 18, 2009

Dear Diary, I think Patriot misses eating all the green grass and clover in the fields. Now there's just lots and lots of snow. Since there's no grass till spring, we feed him hay that has some clover mixed in, but I don't think he's fooled! At least I bring him plenty of apples. I swear Patriot can smell the apples in my jacket pockets as soon as I walk in the barn!

Day 78

January 14, 2009

Dear Diary, Momma found this box of old pictures in one of the closets a few days ago. So Momma, Grandma and I have been going through them and then scanning them all onto our computer so we can put them on disks. Some of the pictures aren't even in color! Grandma said all the pictures used to be like that. Isn't that strange? I found some of my grandma when she was a little girl. I kind of think I look like her.

Day 77

January 7, 2009

Dear Diary, People always ask me if I'm lonely since I don't have any brothers or sisters. You know, I'm really not. We have so many animals on our farm, and then there's Momma and Daddy and now Grandma here too. I kind of like being the only one. Well, except for maybe when it comes to doing the chores, then it might be nice to have someone help do the laundry!

Day 76

January 2, 2009

Dear Diary, Grandma was thinking about moving! She told Momma and Daddy she didn't want to be a burden, and she had only meant to stay a little while until the insurance money came from the house she lost in the flood. But I love having her here all the time, and not just for vacations. My parents both said she should stay, and so I think she is. That's the best news! I can't wait to tell Isabelle-

Day 75

December 31, 2008

Dear Diary, Well, this is it. The last day of 2008. We don't usually do anything special for New Year's. In fact, I'm normally in bed before the ball drops on t.v. I know it sounds lame, but it's not like it won't still be the new year when I wake up the next morning anyway!

Day 74

December 26, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm really kind of missing the green grass and flowers. It already feels like its been snowing forever. Don't get me wrong, it really is beautiful, but my favorite place to be is outside. And in this weather, I don't last outside very long! I think I'm going to call Isabelle and see if she what she's doing.

Day 73

December 21, 2008

Dear Diary, There's good news and bad news. The good news is that my teacher, Mrs. Braun, says my handwriting is getting better, and that she can tell that I'm really trying. The bad news is that now it's taking me FOREVER to write anything! So here it is winter vacation, and I have to work on my handwriting some more. Practice makes perfect I guess.

Day 72

December 15, 2008

Dear Diary, So much for Lucky being a barncat! It's been so cold lately and she would just stand on the front porch and cry till someone let her in. Daddy says once it's warm in the spring, she's going back to the barn, but I think Momma and I know better. Now she sleeps by my feet in my bed at night. Sometimes I can feel her purring too.

Day 71

December 7, 2008

Dear Diary, It's snowing, again! It really is beautiful to watch the snow fall,  looking out the window. As long as the snow is dry, I like it. When it feels more like rain, that's no fun at all. Wet snow also makes it really hard to make a snowman. I'm waiting for enough snow to build one. Daddy says he'll help me.

Day 70

December 3, 2008

Dear Diary, I always worry about Patriot being warm enough in the barn when it's so cold outside. Momma and Daddy say animals have fur to stay warm, but Patriot doesn't have that much fur. I put some extra hay in his stall so he can lay down and hopefully it will help him stay warm. Maybe I should have brought a blanket too!

Day 69

November 17, 2008

Dear Diary, My teacher sent home some handwriting worksheets. I don't mind doing homework, but handwriting is not my favorite thing. Probably because I have a hard time with it. It always feels like the other kids in my class are done way before me when we do writing. And I wish my handwriting was neat like Isabelle's. Momma says that's why I need to keep practicing. Well, since Mrs. Braun sent home worksheets it looks like I don't have much choice now.

Day 68

November 14, 2008

Dear Diary, I should be asleep right now, but I just don't feel tired yet. So I'm under my comforter with a flashlight. Maybe it's the full moon. It's so bright in my room it makes it hard to sleep. When I open my eyes I can still see! Uh-oh, I hear someone walking in the hallway, better get to sleep!

Day 67

November 13, 2008

Dear Diary, School was fun today. I actually bought lunch today and usually I just bring my lunch. But today was pizza day, so Momma said it was okay for today. And I had to get the chocolate milk too. Isabelle and I wanted to eat outside, but it's too cold this time of year. And it's snowing too!

Day 66

November 8, 2008

Dear Diary, We were supposed to go into town today, but our car is broken. Momma said the battery died. Now we have to wait until Daddy can get home and fix it. That stinks. Well, I guess I'll try to go do some more work on that puzzle Grandma and I started. It's really hard!

Day 65

November 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma brought home a new puzzle for us to work on. It looks really hard, but I love puzzles. It has postage stamps all over it, so you have to really pay attention to each piece because they all look a lot alike. I think we're going to start it after dinner tonight. I still love having my grandma live with us. I get to see her a lot more than I did before.

Day 64

November 2, 2008

Dear Diary, It's raining outside again. I love the sound of it, and like to open my window so I can feel the wind and hear it even better. At least it didn't rain at Isabelle's house. We had a great time at the party. Isabelle's daddy was telling spooky ghost stories and then her brother tried to scare everybody by sneaking up behind them. I saw him coming though, so it didn't scare me!

Day 63

October 30, 2008

Dear Diary, It's kind of hard to do trick-or-treating when the farms and houses are pretty far apart out here. Usually someone has a big Halloween party and then we do trunk-or-treating. Everyone backs up their cars in a line and sits on the tailgates while the kids go around collecting candy. This year Isabelle's family is having the party since they want to meet more families and moved here not that long ago.

Day 62

October 26, 2008

Dear Diary, Since I got all my chores done on Saturday, I spent the whole day with Patriot today. I feel like I haven't ridden him much lately because I've been so busy with school and getting Lucky settled in. He was stepping all around his stall as soon as he saw me getting his bridle ready. I must be getting taller too, I had to adjust the stirrups a little lower. After we went riding I gave Patriot a bath and got him all cleaned up. I don't think Patriot likes the water as much when it's not hot outside, but we can't have a smelly horse!

Day 61

October 20, 2008

Dear Diary, Whew! I found Lucky right before I went to bed last night. I was so worried, but when I went back down to the barn, there she was. She was walking all around my feet meowing because she was hungry. She must have just wandered off exploring somewhere in the barn or outside. I guess I can understand that, everything is new to Lucky since she's only a kitten.

Day 60

October 19, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm a little worried about Lucky. I went down to the barn before dinner to feed her, and I couldn't find her! Our barn is big, but it isn't huge. How far could she really go? Too bad I can't ask Patriot, since he was right there. I looked all around and called Lucky, but she didn't come. I'm going to check one more time before I go to bed I think. I don't want her to be hungry.

Day 59

October 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle thinks Lucky is such a sweetie. When you hold Lucky, she just curls up in your hands and purrs. After we left Lucky to sleep on a pile of hay, we led Patriot around the fields for a walk. No riding today, we just didn't have time.

Day 58

October 14, 2008

Dear Diary, I asked Momma and Isabelle can come over tomorrow after school. Yipee! I hope Patriot doesn't get jealous with all the attention that Lucky the kitten has been getting. I still love Patriot more than anything, but Lucky needs love too. I think I'll go down and bring Patriot an apple after dinner for a special treat.

Day 57

October 9, 2008

Dear Diary, I told Isabelle all about my kitten Lucky at school. She can't wait to meet him. Hopefully she can come over after school soon. Then instead of getting off at her bus stop, she'll just get off at mine. I'm going to ask Momma.

Day 56

October 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Lucky has a new home! Momma and Daddy said I can keep her as long as she stays in the barn. At first I wasn't happy with that because I wanted her in the house. But then I realized that she can keep Patriot company in the barn. I'm still going to buy her a collar and nametag though, in case she ever gets lost.

Day 55

October 4, 2008

Dear Diary, I think the kitten I found is going to be okay. She's eating more and moving around more now. I've decided to name her Lucky. I'm already begging Momma and Daddy to let me keep her. Keep your fingers crossed, they said "we'll see."

Day 54

October 1, 2008

Dear Diary, Guess what? This morning when I went into the barn, there was this tiny black kitten on the floor of the barn. It was all dirty from the hay. I ran up to the house and got Momma. She said the kitten must be a stray from some wild cat we've seen around. Momma took care of the kitten while I was at school. She's so weak and small that we're feeding her milk from an eyedropper. I hope she'll be okay.

Day 53

September 28, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm sitting here in the barn, right next to Patriot's stall. His new sign we hung above the stall looks perfect. Momma says she can't stand the smell of the hay in the barn, but I love it! This is my favorite place to be, especially when it's raining like today. Not a thunderstorm, but just a rain storm. You can hear the raindrops hitting the roof, I like that.

Day 52

September 27, 2008

Dear Diary, Sometimes I'm kind of clumsy. It seems like I'm always spilling something, especially milk at the dinner table. Afterschool I was drinking a sports drink and walking around with it, and it spilled. Momma gave me that look and said to sit at the table with it. Well, two seconds later I spilled a lot more as I was sitting down. Oops!

Day 51

September 25, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma said she was tired of seeing my bangs hanging down in my eyes. As soon as I came in after school she asked me to sit down and went and got her scissors. I guess they were getting kind of long. Now I don't have to keep brushing them out of my eyes. It's funny how I didn't even notice it before.

Day 50

September 21, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy came home with a surprise for me today. Or maybe I should say a surprise for Patriot. It's a wooden sign for above Patriot's stall that's engraved with his name. It's perfect! And Daddy even had them put a horseshoe on either side of Patriot's name. We're going to hang it up after supper.

Day 49

September 18, 2008

Dear Diary, People always ask me why I named my horse Patriot. That's easy! He was born on the Fourth of July. It seemed like the perfect name to me. The farmer we bought him from just called him "Hank", and that sounded kind of boring to me. I think Patriot suits him much better.

Day 48

September 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Mrs. Hudson is a funny lady. She taught us this song today to remember the most common helping verbs. It works! "Am, as, are, was, were, have, has, had, be, being, been..." The only problem is that now that tune is stuck in my head! At least I can remember them now though.

Day 47

September 11, 2008

Dear Diary, Mrs. Hudson held me back from lunch for a few minutes to talk to me. I was really nervous. She said she knows I'm having a hard to participating in the group assignments, but that she wants me to keep trying. Group projects are part of my class grades. I told her I will try.

Day 46

September 8, 2008

Dear Diary, In class Mrs. Hudson had us split up into groups of four to work on our social studies lesson. I usually like working by myself better. Anytime there's a group assignment I feel like I sit there and don't say anything. The other kids all share their ideas and I just freeze inside when they look at me for my turn. I feel bad. It's not like I don't want to help, it's just hard when you're a little shy.

Day 45

September 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma and I worked on a puzzle and then I went riding. She loves to sit on the front porch and watch me gallop around on Patriot. She said I remind her of herself when she was a little girl. After I was done, Grandma gave Patriot a big red apple. I think she likes to spoil my horse just like she spoils me.

Day 44

September 2, 2008

Dear Diary, Today was my first day back at school. I was so excited to see Isabelle sitting in my class already. I picked the desk right next to hers. The teacher, Mrs. Hudson, said we can pick where we sit, and as long as we don't talk too much then we can stay in that desk. That's going to be hard I bet, but I really like sitting next to Isabelle. Our teacher Mrs. Hudson is really funny. She likes to sing in the middle of class!

Day 43

August 30, 2008

Dear Diary, I spent most of the day today down at the barn. I know it's time to get ready for school to start. I'm just a little sad that with school starting I won't be able to spend as much time with Patriot. Of course, I'll see him before school when I feed him his breakfast, but then I'll have to wait until late in the afternoon when the bus drops me off. Hopefully he won't miss me too bad.

Day 42

August 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Yuck! Momma and Grandma were drinking coffee this morning after breakfast. I felt kind of left out, so I asked them if I could have a cup too. Momma gave me a small mug with a smile and said, "it's really for grown-ups sweetie, but you can try it." I had only one sip, and that was plenty. I'm not sure why grown-ups drink that stuff anyway. I think I'll stick to juice in the morning.

Day 41

August 24, 2008

Dear Diary, It's so nice to sleep in peace and quiet again. "Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse." Ha, ha. Daddy finally caught the little cheese eater and put him out by the barn where the other mice are. I'm just relieved to know what was making that squeaking sound. I was starting to think I was hearing things!

Day 40

August 21, 2008

Dear Diary, A mouse! That's what was making that squeaking noise at night in the hallway! Momma said she saw it run into the spare room when she was in the hall this morning. I love animals and all, but a mouse? I'm more of a horse girl. Daddy says he'll try to catch it tonight. I asked him if he could please catch it without hurting it and set it free outside. Even though I don't like mice there's no reason he can't live outside. He said he'd try.

Day 39

August 18, 2008

Dear Diary, The squeaking noise at night is starting to really bother me. I asked Grandma this morning if she heard it since her room is right across the hall from mine. She said no because she takes her hearing aid out at night to sleep. I must be hearing things. But now, even when I don't hear the squeaking, I feel like I'm laying there waiting to hear it.

Day 38

August 16, 2008

Dear Diary, The book I'm reading right now is really good, it's a mystery. Not really a scarey book, but one where you have to follow the clues to try to figure solve the mystery. Anyways, last night I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking I heard a squeaking noise in the hallway. When I looked outside my door I didn't see anything though. But then again, it was dark in the hallway, and I couldn't see much of anything anyway.

Day 37

August 12, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm so bored. I don't have any books left to read now. I just finished my last chapter book. Momma said maybe we can go into town in a couple days to check out a few more books from the library. Then she said why don't I just read one of them over again. It's just not the same when you already know how the story ends, but I guess that's what I'll have to do for now.

Day 36

August 9, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I had the best time at her house. We dressed up in all our different clothes. She and I are the same size so we traded outfits too. Then we put on music and danced all around. Next time I'm going to invite Isabelle to my house.

Day 35

August 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Momma said that as soon as my chores are done I can go over to Isabelle's house to play. I'm going to bring my dress-up clothes and we're going to have a fashion show. I have them already packed in my princess bag. So I guess that means I better finish up. I already fed and watered Patriot. Now I have to sort my laundry and clean my room.

Day 34

August 1, 2008

Dear Diary, I spent all afternoon down at the barn with Patriot. He loves when I bring him apples for a treat. Sometimes I bring a book I'm reading down to the barn and read to him. But today I was busy cleaning the stall and brushing him. Daddy says he can always tell when I've spent the day in the barn because I come inside smelling like the barn.

Day 33

July 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Last night Momma and Daddy went out to dinner and a movie. So Grandma and I stayed up late having fun. Grandma puts curlers in her hair to make it all wavey the next day. So I asked her to put my hair in curlers too. It looked really funny in rollers, but now today my hair is all wavey. I kind of like it like this, but not enough to put rollers in my hair every night before bed.

Day 32

July 25, 2008

Dear Diary, It's so nice having my grandma here all the time. When I wake up in the morning she's always making breakfast, like homemade biscuits or pancakes. And since there's no school right now, we get to spend a lot of time together. We read books and play games. I love to play Sorry. Grandma always laughs when I send her guy back to start.

Day 31

July 23, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and I have been working on this really big puzzle. It's 500 pieces! I've never done one that big before, but if Isabelle and I do it together I think we can finish it. Of course it's a puzzle with horses. There's a momma horse and her baby, a foal.

Day 30

July 18, 2008

Dear Diary, There's this song I keep hearing on the radio that I just love! It's by that guy that won American Idol this year. It's such an awesome song and it just gets stuck in my head. My momma just smiles when she hears me walking through the house singing it. Grandma just says "What's American Idol?" when Momma tells her the song. I love American Idol! Maybe they should make a snow globe!

Day 29

July 14, 2008

Dear Diary, We made it back from Grandma's. It was hard going through everything in her house to see what the floods hadn't ruined. But luckily her pictures were okay. So we boxed up what we could and brought it all back to the farm. I'm so happy to be back. I missed Patriot! And after seeing what the floods did to so many homes, I know how lucky we are to have the farm and each other.

Day 28

July 11, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma's place is a few hours away, so we're driving in our truck to get there. Momma and Grandma are pretty quiet. We've seen the pictures on tv about what the area looks like, but I know that seeing it in person will be very different. The community is really coming together and helping each other. At least that's one good thing.

Day 27

July 10, 2008

Dear Diary, Momma and I are going with Grandma back to her house. Grandma wants to see what things in the house weren't ruined by the floods. She's still going to be staying with us, so we'll be bringing her things back to our farm. I think Grandma is mostly hoping that her family pictures and sentimental things are okay. We're leaving tomorrow.

Day 26

July 6, 2008

Dear Diary, Our bbq with Isabelle's family was a big success! Our mommas talked like they were old friends with Grandma. Daddy showed Isabelle's dad around the farm. And Isabelle met Patriot. I think she was a little shy around him at first, almost like she was scared. But when she saw how gentle he was, she helped me brush him. What a great day we had!

Day 25

July 4, 2008

Dear Diary, Isabelle and her family are coming over for a bbq today. Since they just moved here, they really don't know anybody yet. I think it was really sweet of my momma to think of them. I can't wait for Isabelle to meet Patriot! Better go, I have to help Momma make potato salad and all the other yummy stuff.

Day 24

July 1, 2008

Dear Diary, Now that Grandma has seen Patriot, she agrees he's the prettiest horse ever. She watches me ride him around the field, clapping her hands when I make him trot. It already feels like I've had Patriot forever. It's hard to remember he's only been my horse for a few months.

Day 23

June 29, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy came home yesterday. We were so glad! He said he helped as much as he could, but that it was time to come back home. Grandma and Momma made his favorite ham dinner too.

Day 22

June 24, 2008

Dear Diary, Daddy is going over to the next town to help. He says he can help with more sandbags, or whatever else they need. He and some other people from our town are taking a big truck over with lots of bottled water and food. It doesn't seem like enough, but every little bit helps he says. I'll miss him while he's gone, but he says he'll be back in a few days.

Day 21

June 21, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm having a good time with my grandma here even though the floods are still going on. We try not to talk about it too much. Every night we sit in the kitchen. And she brushes my hair while she talks to Momma and Daddy. It feels so soft to have her brush my hair. She's been doing it ever since I was a little girl. She says her hair used to be the exact same color when she was younger.

Day 20

June 19, 2008

Dear Diary, My Grandma may be staying with us for a while. Her neighbor called last night to say that their town had been evacuated. The whole area is flooded since the levee broke. It made me so sad to see Grandma cry. She's lived in that house since she married my Grandpa. And now it's flooded. It's kinda scarey to see the flood reports on the tv. All this muddy water everywhere you look. Momma and Daddy say we're safe where we are.

Day 19

June 17, 2008

Dear Diary, When my Grandma came today for her visit, I was so happy to see her! But I have to admit that I was excited to see what she brought me in her bag too. When I opened the box, I saw a beautiful Cinderella snowglobe! I've been wanting a Cinderella one for a while. I gave her a huge hug and said thank you a million times. I know just the place to put it on my shelf. It even plays music!

Day 18

June 16, 2008

Dear Diary, Grandma's coming tomorrow! I'm not sure how long she can stay. Hopefully for a long time. And when I talked to her on the phone last night, she said she has a surprise for me! A snow globe? I hope so. But I am just very excited for her to come. Grandma makes chocolate pudding from scratch, and it's the best ever!

Day 17

June 12, 2008

Dear Diary, One of my least favorite chores is laundry. But that's one thing that's never ending around our farm. It seems like just by the time Momma and I finish the last load, it's time to start all over again. Momma says it's just one of those things that has to be done no matter how much you compain about it. Guess I better go get started.

Day 16

June 9, 2008

Dear Diary, I overslept this morning. And Patriot was getting impatient for breakfast by the time I got to the barn. He kept leaning his head over his stall door nudging my shoulder with his head while I was filling the feed bucket. Horses never sleep in, not on weekends, and not on summer vacation I guess.

Day 15

June 5, 2008

Dear Diary, Usually in the summer I go stay with my grandma. She only lives a few hours away. But now that I have Patriot I don't want to leave him. My grandma said she can come stay here instead! Wait till she sees Patriot! And usually when I visit Grandma, she gives me a new princess snow globe to add to my collection. So far I have 7 of them. I hope she remembers!

Day 14

June 3, 2008

Dear Diary, One of the coolest things about living on a farm is having so much room to play. I can play in the barn, or run around through the fields. Mom says as long as I stay inside our fence I can go wherever I want. Once my homework is done, I like to go outside and play till I get called in for dinner. Sometimes I just walk Patriot around. I hope the other horses don't get jealous of how much attention I give Patriot. But Patriot is my very own horse. The other two horses my dad uses to work our farm.

Day 13

May 31, 2008

Dear Diary, My daddy's birthday is today. I colored him a pretty picture for his office. I hope he likes it. It's a picture of our family in front of our house. I even drew Patriot next to us since he's part of our family now too. I also bough him a big bag of pistachios since those are his favorite.

Day 12

May 29, 2008

Dear Diary, James put a frog in the teacher's desk today in school! She was busy writing on the board when he did it. After a few minutes the frog started croaking. I tried so hard not to laugh. But even our teacher Mrs. Johnson started laughing! She made James take the frog outside. Then he had to stay inside during recess to clean the desks.

Day 11

May 28, 2008

Dear Diary, Only a couple more weeks of school! Our class is going on an end of the year fieldtrip to Adventureland Amusement Park! There's so many cool rides and shows to see. I just hope the new water playland area is open. It's supposed to have water slides and tunnels and other fun stuff.

Day 10

May 26, 2008

Dear Diary, There is no school today because it's Memorial Day. My Mom says after we're through with our chores we can go into town. I like to do chores like clean up the barn. That way I can be with Patriot. The ther fun thing about the barn is jumping down into the mound of hay!

Day 9

May 23, 2008

Dear Diary, It's Friday! That means we get to have breakfast for dinner tonight. Usually Daddy and I make homemade biscuits or waffles. I like when we make waffles best because we put chocolate chips in them! After dinner we like to sit out on our front porch swing and watch the sun go down. It's amazing how many stars you can see when it gets dark.

Day 8

May 20, 2008

Dear Diary, Guess what? Isabelle likes horses too! She doesn't have a horse. I told her maybe she can come see Patriot at our farm. Isabelle does have a collection of horse pictures and stuffed animals and other cool stuff. I think I'll take a picture of patriot for Isabelle to add to her collection!

Day 7

May 19, 2008

Dear Diary, There is a new girl in my class. Her name is Isabelle and she just moved here from Florida. We sat together at lunchtime. I think she is very nice. Maybe we can play together tomorrow at recess.

Day 6

May 15, 2008

Dear Diary, I'm pretty good at doing puzzles. My Dad taught me how to sort the pieces before I start. Then I like to do the edges first. The biggest puzzle I ever did was 300 pieces! Of course, my Dad helped me with it.

Day 5

May 13, 2008

Dear Diary, I had fun at school today. Tuesday is library day, and I love checking out new books. I really love chapter books. Sometimes I take my books to the barn and read to Patriot. Not sure if he's listening or not.

Day 4

May 11, 2008

Dear Diary, I know I haven't written in a while. I try to spend all my time with Patriot. He is the sweetest horse. They are a lot of work. Feeding him before my breakfast. Then I have to clean his stall. I like to brush him every day. I think he likes it too.

Day 2

March 21, 2008

Dear Diary, You will never guess what happened. I actually got my horse today!! I think it was the good luck the doves gave me! Anyway, his name is Patriot and he limps because he had a broken leg when he was a colt, and it never healed properly. He is the sweetest horse ever!

Day 1

March 18, 2008

Dear Diary,

A couple of days ago, we had the strangest thing happen on our farm. There were 2 white doves sitting on our barn. I know that means good luck so I was wishing for a horse. The horse I want is tan and beautiful and I saw it on a horse farm. The reason I want this particular horse is because it rides with a limp and I feel so bad for it.
