Kara Vail's Diary
Day 163
March 21, 2010
Dear Diary, Mom went out shopping last night after we went to bed, and found some really cute shirts and shoes for me. A couple of the shirts are the wrong size, but hopefully she can change them for a smaller size since I love them. The sandals are silver glitter with little pink butterflies. I can't wait to wear those this spring!
Day 162
March 16, 2010
Dear Diary, The only part of the Olympics I really watched was the skiing. I wish one day I could ski like that and have that be my only job. My dad says you can if you work really, really hard and get very good. I think I work hard. I try to anyway.
Day 161
March 9, 2010
Dear Diary, Okay, the way I ended up telling my mom was not the way I had planned. It actually came out as me yelling and crying. Not good. I just felt like she wasn't listening to me. Now I sound like a brat. She said we'd talk about it later when I calmed down. So here I sit, in my room, wondering what she'll say.
Day 160
March 3, 2010
Dear Diary, I know my mom loves us both, but sometimes it feels like she loves my little sister more than she loves me. I know Lilly's little and needs more help with stuff, but just because I don't need my mom's help doesn't mean I don't want her there. How can I tell her that?
Day 159
February 27, 2010
Dear Diary, Mom just got the magazine in the mail for summer camp. I'm hoping that means I'll get to do the drama camp again like I did last summer. It was a blast! I'm going to call Haley and see if she's doing it.
Day 158
February 25, 2010
Dear Diary, My parents are so funny sometimes! Dad is telling my mom that she's not allowed to pick any more movies for awhile since he thinks all the ones she has been picking are bad. Okay, some of them were really bad, but I thought a couple were good. Poor Mom! Everybody can't always like the same movies. My dad always wants to watch war movies and scarey movies, and I think those are stupid.
Day 157
February 19, 2010
Dear Diary, My little sister Lilly loves to watch Dora on tv. I used to watch it too, but now it's really hard to listen to! I just want to yell "Dora, Swiper's right behind you, don't you see him?!?!?!" But Lilly is obsessed with Dora, and she loves when I watch it with her. How can I say no?
Day 156
February 18, 2010
Dear Diary, It's Black History Month, and we have to pick a famous African American to write a report about. I'm going to write about Rosa Parks. She was a civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat on a bus she was riding. I still have to do a lot of checking on the internet for more facts about her though.
Day 155
February 10, 2010
Dear Diary, Our school is selling carnations for Valentine's Day. You pay for them, and then they get delivered to your friends during school. My mom said I can have $5 to buy them for my friends. I just have to decide which 5 friends. Haley, definitely, but I'll have to figure out the rest.
Day 154
February 4, 2010
Dear Diary, I've lived in Colorado my whole life, and I still learned something new. My teacher told us that the word "Colorado" means "colored red" in Spanish. It was named because of the red clay that's everywhere here. If I ever get on Jeopardy someday, maybe it'll be one of the questions-
Day 153
January 30, 2010
Dear Diary, Almost Valentine's Day already? I love Valentine's Day! It's fun to make cards for all my friends and family. I usually get something special for Haley too, like chocolate or something. Our teacher hasn't mentioned a party or anything, I wonder if we're having one?
Day 152
January 24, 2010
Dear Diary, I have so much homework to do. The good news is that my dad promised to take me to the lifts later today if I can hurry and get my homework done. He knows that'll make me get it done, and he's right. I just need to call Haley to find out what page our math homwork was in our book. Better get movin'.
Day 151
January 17, 2010
Dear Diary, Dad's going out tonight to watch a game on tv with his friends. That means it's girls' night tonight for Mom, Lilly and me. I'm thinking we should have a toenail painting party. I have this really cool new one with gold sparkles in it that I've been wanting to use. Sweet!
Day 150
January 12, 2010
Dear Diary, Today in the lunchroom, some kids at my table were daring each other to drink chocolate mixed with about ten packets of ketchup. That is so nasty, I would never! The boys at our table are always doing stuff like that.
Day 149
January 8, 2010
Dear Diary, I don't even drink coffee, but I love the smell of it. And we always have coffee brewing in our house with all the guests here. Sometimes my mom lets me make it. I think I do a pretty good job too. Well, time for a snack, I'm starving!
Day 148
January 5, 2010
Dear Diary, I think I have to buy a new diary. My little sister stole this one from under my bed, and she colored on almost all the pages! My mom felt bad and said she'd get me a new one. I guess next time I'll have to put it up high where Lilly can't reach.
Day 147
December 29, 2009
Dear Diary, I really wanted to go skiing this afternoon, but I can't. My dad has too much work to do, and Mom is getting all ready for the guests coming in tomorrow. That stinks! There is lots of fresh snow out there that's just going to waste if I'm not using it!
Day 146
December 25, 2009
Dear Diary, My teacher said we could get extra credit if we wrote a story about our vacation. I really want the extra points so I can try to get an 'A'. I just have no idea what I should write. We haven't gone anywhere. I have been skiing a few times, I could always write something about that...
Day 145
December 16, 2009
Dear Diary, Lilly keeps biting me! Ouch! I don't think she wants to hurt me, since we're playing and having fun. I told her if she bit me again I wouldn't play with her anymore, and she started crying. I'm the one who got bit, shouldn't I be crying???
Day 144
December 13, 2009
Dear Diary, I feel very lazy today. I'm still in my warm, fuzzy jammies. I know, I know, it's almost lunchtime, but I don't feel like getting dressed today. Mom said as long as I stay upstairs, that's fine. If I go down where the guests are, then I have to get dressed. I can deal with that.
Day 143
December 5, 2009
Dear Diary, We're learning about the Revolutionary War in school. It's not like we didn't already learn about this last year, but I guess I may have forgotten some stuff. I remember who won the war, duh! I hope we don't have a test on it though.
Day 142
December 1, 2009
Dear Diary, Yeah for snow! We've had a lot lately, and my parents finally took us skiing over the weekend. We stayed here in beaver Creek where there were more lifts open. It was really awesome!
Day 141
November 26, 2009
Dear Diary, Thankful for Thanksgiving, but not so thankful that the best trails aren't open for skiing yet. We've had snow, but just not quite enough I guess. Hopefully this weekend! I better get my gear ready just in case.
Day 140
November 20, 2009
Dear Diary, Happy birthday to me! And yes, we are going iceskating in a little bit. Even better, the lifts are planning to open this weekend! That's so awesome, I can hardly wait to get on the slopes again. I love winter!
Day 139
November 13, 2009
Dear Diary, My birthday is next Friday, and my mom keeps nagging me about having a party. I keep trying to tell her I don't want a party. None of my friends do birthday parties anymore. I just want to go do something with my friends, like maybe go iceskating.
Day 138
November 9, 2009
Dear Diary, The mailman keeps bringing all these packages to our door lately. Mom says she's been shopping on the internet. I swear, we never go to the mall anymore, I guess Mom doesn't need to, but I like to go. It's fun just to go and hang out and walk around. Besides, you can't get a hot pretzel on the internet!
Day 137
November 6, 2009
Dear Diary, Our first guests of the season came in late last night. I didn't even get to meet them until this morning before I left for school. Mom said they're from Kentucky. I don't want to be rude, but they talk kind of funny. I had a hard time understanding them. But, I'm sure that to them the way I talk sounds funny too!
Day 136
October 31, 2009
Dear Diary, Halloween was fun, but over really fast. My little sister looked so cute in her little Barbie dress, like a little fairy. We didn't go to a lot of houses though, Lilly wasn't feeling so hot, and I think Mom said she might be getting a fever. I hope she feels better, we were going to go to the mall tomorrow.
Day 135
October 27, 2009
Dear Diary, Our first guests of the season are coming in a couple weeks. My parents are already running around like crazy trying to get everything ready. It really is fun living in a bed and breakfast. You meet so many different people from all over. I wonder where they'll be from this time...
Day 134
October 19, 2009
Dear Diary, You should see the adorable costume my little sister is going to be wearing! It's a Barbie princess and it's so cute. I wish I was little enough to dress up again in something like Barbie princess! I have no idea if I'm even going to wear a costume this year.
Day 133
October 10, 2009
Dear Diary, It has started snowing some here and there, but not enough for the Beaver Creek lifts to be open yet. There are a couple lifts open in Colorado, but not many. Most of the ski resorts don't open until the end of November, but here's hoping for a pile of early snow!
Day 132
October 6, 2009
Dear Diary, My mom is having some vein surgery done this afternoon on one of her legs. She said it's not anything major, but she has to wear this funny looking stocking for the next couple of weeks. She should be home by the time I get home from school. Maybe I'll see if I can help my dad make dinner tonight, that would probably help.
Day 131
October 4, 2009
Dear Diary, How embarassing! I had stuffed pizza for lunch and then went and ran some errands with my dad. When we got home I noticed that I had a big piece of spinach stuck on my front tooth! I went all around with my dad with this big green thing hanging in the front of my mouth. Why didn't he say anything? I wonder if anyone noticed.
Day 130
September 27, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm trying to talk my parents into letting me dance 3 days a week, instead of only 2. Most of the girls in my class do 3 days. I know what they'll say though, "just because other kids do something doesn't mean you get to." Maybe they'll surprise me and just say yes right away...but probably not!
Day 129
September 22, 2009
Dear Diary, We had an early release day at school. That means we get out 2 hours earlier than we usually do. I have no idea why, but we have a couple of them every year. I promised my little sister Lilly that after I did my homework I would have a tea party with her. She thinks that's like the best thing in the world. Guess I better get working, before she comes looking for me-
Day 128
September 14, 2009
Dear Diary, I wish my mom would hurry up and get off the phone. I need to call Gwen so I can see if she wants to come home after school with me tomorrow. Mom always makes us do our homework first, but that shouldn't take too long. Ooh, I think she's off!
Day 127
September 8, 2009
Dear Diary, It's been rainy lately. I know it'll be awhile before it turns into snow, but I can't wait! It's only September, so probably about 3 months to go. Maybe school will make the time go by faster. Well, time to get ready for bed, it's a school night.
Day 126
September 3, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm liking school this first week. So far, I haven't had any homework. I'm sure that won't last, but it's great for now! My teacher is being really picky about school supplies though. No pencils that aren't yellow, and boring. No folders with decorations, and they have to be red or blue. Not sure why, but okay.
Day 125
August 27, 2009
Dear Diary, We went to the store last night to buy school supplies, and it was crazy busy! And school doesn't even start for a few more days. We couldn't even find glue sticks, or pencils. Mom said we'll try to get the rest this weekend. I did find a really cute backpack though-
Day 124
August 26, 2009
Dear Diary, School starts Monday, and I'm starting to get a little nervous. I like school, but I always get nervous when I have a new teacher, and new kids in my class. I know I'll be fine, but I want to get the first day over with already! I worry about stupid stuff, like getting lost trying to find my class, or forgetting which bus I ride. Hurry up Monday!
Day 123
August 17, 2009
Dear Diary, I did it! I made meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner last night. Mashing potatoes is harder than it looks. You have to really work to get all those lumps out. My mom helped me a little, but not too much. She knew I wanted to try it myself. I think it turned out really good, and even my picky sister Lilly loved it!
Day 122
August 15, 2009
Dear Diary, I told my parents that I wanted to make dinner for everybody tomorrow. The only problem is that I have no idea what to make. I know my mom will help me, but I kind of want to see if I can do it all by myself. She said we could look for a new recipe online later on, and then go to the store tomorrow. That sounds like a plan-
Day 121
August 8, 2009
Dear Diary, Yesterday, Haley asked me to go with her to the climbing wall. We had a lot of fun, but it was a lot of exercise. It's like rock climbing, only much safer in my opinion! We were laughing at how long it was taking us to get to the top. After we finished our last climb, we had lunch at Haley's. It was just like it used to be-
Day 120
August 3, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley is home from vacation and wants to hang out. It feels like forever since we were really best friends. I'm hoping we will be again someday. At least she called, right? That's a start-
Day 119
July 30, 2009
Dear Diary, My dad brought home this movie for us to watch. It's called Marley and Me. It was the cutest movie, until the end. I can't believe how sad the ending was! I was crying, my mom was crying, I think my dad was maybe crying too. And we don't even have a dog!
Day 118
July 23, 2009
Dear Diary, The play was a big hit! You could hear all the parents clapping and cheering even after we left the stage. I was so proud of myself for not forgetting my lines this time the way I usually do when I'm performing. Maybe I'm finally getting over my stage fright! An actress with stage fright is not a good thing-
Day 117
July 19, 2009
Dear Diary, We're doing the Wizard of Oz, and I'm now the part of the Scarecrow. The Scarecrow isn't very exciting, but at least I have lines. We're painting the scenery tomorrow, and then have only until Friday to get ready, that's when we perform for our parents. Wish me luck!
Day 116
July 14, 2009
Dear Diary, I was kind of sad that I didn't get paired up with Haley for the exercises we did at camp today. We're practicing for our auditions to play a part in the show. I'm with some boy I don't know. His name is Conner, and he is nice, but never stops talking. Well, off to rehearse my lines again, auditions are tomorrow!
Day 115
July 7, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley is there! I really hope this gives us a chance to be friends again, but right now she's not saying much to me. At least those girls she was hanging out with in school aren't in camp, maybe that will help. I really miss her.
Day 114
July 3, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm so happy that drama camp starts Monday. I'm so bored! Last year Haley and I did drama camp together. This year I don't even know what camps she's doing since we're not really friends right now. In a way, I hope she's there so we can be friends again. And in another way, I hope she's not there, because if she doesn't want to be friends anymore that might be hard.
Day 113
June 27, 2009
Dear Diary, At the dance studio, there was this highschool girl practicing her ballet, and she was amazing. I bet she's been dancing a really long time because she could do all these pirouettes where you keep spinning around and around. I wish I could be that good someday. Our teacher says we just have to keep practicing.
Day 112
June 24, 2009
Dear Diary, My little sister Lilly's new favorite thing to say is "stop it!" It's really annoying, because she says it to everyone no matter what you say to her. I can say "hi" and she says "stop it!" Mom says to just ignore her and she'll get bored with saying it. It's hard to ignore something when it's so annoying!
Day 111
June 16, 2009
Dear Diary, Oh my gosh! Haley just called me, and you know what she said? She wanted to know how I liked the movie and who was that girl I was with. I didn't even see her there, but I guess Haley was at the movies at the same time we were. There were a lot of people there, I didn't even see her in there. I think Haley sounded almost jealous that I was hanging out with Gwen. Well, she didn't give me any choice!
Day 110
June 14, 2009
Dear Diary, Gwen and I went to see the movie "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" I thought it was even better than the first one. Really cute! After that her mom took us to get milkshakes. We had a good time, Gwen is really sweet-
Day 109
June 10, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley has still been hanging out with those other girls even though school is out. I'm trying to give her space even though it really makes me sad that she doesn't want to hang out lately. There's other girls from school I'm friends with that I think I might do things with instead of Haley. Gwen has been wanting me to go see a movie with her or something.
Day 108
June 5, 2009
Dear Diary, Dad and I watched some travel show last night that was all about these exotic places all around the world. It was amazing, and I hope someday I can visit places like that. There's a lot of places I still haven't seen here in the United States, so it may take me awhile. We usually go on vacation every summer since that's the slow season for our bed and breakfast. Come to think of it, I haven't heard my parents say anything about this summer. Are we going anywhere?
Day 107
May 27, 2009
Dear Diary, My mom says I should just give Haley some space and see what happens. Haley's my best friend, and pretty much the only one I do anything with! How do I go from doing everything with her to giving her space? I just wish she would tell me why she's acting so strange. It's very frustrating!
Day 106
May 23, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley has been acting really weird lately. She started hanging out with some other girls at school, and now she talks different too. It's like they have their own secret language or something, and I had a hard time understanding what she was talking about. Did I do something wrong?
Day 105
May 18, 2009
Dear Diary, Even though Grampy and Nan have been here lots of times before they still like to drive all around and see the mountains and look at property. I don't know what's so exciting about looking at property, but they really like it. And then we went out to dinner and went shopping. It really was a lot of fun even though I still had to go to school.
Day 104
May 12, 2009
Dear Diary, Grampy and Nan are coming to visit! It was supposed to be a surprise, but I heard my parents talking about it earlier. They'll be here tomorrow! And they're staying for a whole week! I wish they could stay even longer-
Day 103
May 4, 2009
Dear Diary, Yuck! I love the snow, but this isn't really snow. It snowed this morning. Then this afternoon it turned to rain. It's just really wet and messy. It's not like you can ski now, all the slopes are closed till the end of the year. So sad!
Day 102
May 3, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley spent the night last night. She was teaching me how to play this new game on the computer. It was hard, but I got better after a while. I don't use the computer as much as Haley does, so she's always showing me new things on there. I'd rather be outside. By the way, it's supposed to snow tomorrow!!!
Day 101
April 27, 2009
Dear Diary, It will be fun to have our house back to ourselves pretty soon. Ski season is ending and we hardly ever get visitors in the summer. That also means I get all those rooms to play in again. Lilly has really gotten into playing hide and go seek with me, so now we'll have more space to do it in.
Day 100
April 23, 2009
Dear Diary, Mom tricked me today. When I got in the car after school she said we were running errands. Well, the first errand was a dentist appointment for me! Nice one Mom. He says my teeth look perfectly clean, but my teeth are starting to shift around a little from you know what. Guess I better try harder, huh?
Day 99
April 17, 2009
Dear Diary, I have a secret. Sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep at night, and I still like to suck my thumb. Not every night, but sometimes. My parents have really been nagging me about it, and they say I'm going to ruin my teeth if I don't quit soon. I know, I know...
Day 98
April 12, 2009
Dear Diary, I had a dream last night that I won a contest and the prize was a trip around the world! How awesome would that be? I was allowed to pick 5 different places I wanted to visit. That would be a hard decision because there are so many beautiful places, I want to see them all! I think my first choice would be Italy. Rome looks amazing-
Day 97
April 5, 2009
Dear Diary, Our whole family actually went skiing this afternoon. That is, after my mom made breakfast for all our house guests, and put dinner on the stove. Dad and I were skiing, Mom chased Lilly around at the bottom of the mountain. Now new powder, but it was pretty good out there today. Or at least it was until I put a big hole in the knee of my new pink ski pants. Bummer!
Day 96
April 3, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm so jealous! We still have some snow to ski on, but Utah just had 30 inches of snow! They're so lucky! I wish Utah wasn't so far away. The slopes must be awesome!
Day 95
March 31, 2009
Dear Diary, Dad took me to get my free pizza after school. I had earned a free one from that reading program we do at school where you get points for every book you finish. Well, my certificate expired tomorrow so we had to use it. That was delicious! Time to get ready for dance! Yes, now that ski season is just about over, my parents signed me up for dance class again.
Day 94
March 22, 2009
Dear Diary, I can't stop watching that video of the talking bird! It makes me laugh every time! There's this show on tv that has all these animals who do amazing tricks. I'm going to see if my mom can record it for me. Well, off to play outside with Lilly-
Day 93
March 20, 2009
Dear Diary, Dad showed me this really funny email he got from somebody. It was a bird that could make all kinds of sound effects, and talk really good. It was so cute when the little gray bird pretended to yawn like he was tired. Then he made all these different animal sounds. Too funny!
Day 92
March 17, 2009
Dear Diary, We did the coolest thing in science today. We made electromagnets! We just used a battery, wire, and paperclips. It was a pretty neat lesson, and we made it ourselves! I wish we could do fun stuff like that every day-
Day 91
March 8, 2009
Dear Diary, Daylight Savings today. Not sure why we move our clocks two times a year, forward then backward. Why? It just means I have to go to bed an hour earlier tonight even when I probably won't be tired yet.
Day 90
March 3, 2009
Dear Diary, I'm kind of sad that it's March already. That means before I know it ski season will be over. We usually get to ski until the beginning of April if we're lucky. This year it went by so fast! Maybe my parents will let me take a dance class again before summer.
Day 89
February 28, 2009
Dear Diary, It's Friday! And after my chores are done I'm going to have dinner at Haley's house. Everything has to be spotless. We have a few more people checking in tonight and tomorrow morning. One couple is coming from Florida. I've never been there before.
Day 88
February 24, 2009
Dear Diary, Isn't winter just the absolute best? I can't imagine there are people out there who don't love snow. If it were up to me there would be snow falling all year in Colorado. The only thing is then I wouldn't have enough time for skiing, dancing and acting all year. Whew! That would be exhausting!
Day 87
February 19, 2009
Dear Diary, Snow predicted for the next couple of days! You know what that means...fresh powder for skiing after that! Dad said if he gets his work done, he'll take Haley and me skiing this weekend. Sweet!
Day 86
February 12, 2009
Dear Diary, I brought my sunglasses I won for the fundraiser back into school today. My teacher said he'd see what he could do about getting me a new pair. That sounds fair. Other than that, not too much exciting is going on right now. Maybe tomorrow something exciting will happen-
Day 85
February 9, 2009
Dear Diary, We had a fundraiser at school last month. Well, I finally got my prize for all the candy bars I sold. It's a pair of sunglasses that are also a radio. They have ear buds attached and you can change the radio station and volume right on the sunglasses. The only problem is that they don't work! How can they give a brand new prize to kids that doesn't even work?
Day 84
February 4, 2009
Dear Diary, The skiing has been perfect lately. Lots of packed powder, and actually somewhat sunny. The other day I went with Haley and her family skiing. When we were tired we relaxed in front of the fire pits. How awesome was that?!?! I told my dad that we should build a fire pit in our backyard. I think people who come to our bed and breakfast might like that, so would I!
Day 83
January 31, 2009
Dear Diary, Tomorrow is the "big game"...the Superbowl. I don't really see what the big deal is, especially since both teams playing aren't even from here. Some people. Can you tell I just hate football?!?! I'm going to hit the slopes. If everyone's watching the game then there should be plenty of snow for me!
Day 82
January 22, 2009
Dear Diary, Haley's mom said she can come spend the night tomorrow night. My dad will just pick us both up after school. Isn't that awesome? We just have to stay out of the way of the guests staying with us. They're usually only here in the morning and at night anyway. In the afternoons we can run around the whole house!
Day 81
January 18, 2009
Dear Diary, Some mornings my little sister Lilly wakes up when it was still really dark outside. And once she's awake, there's no sleeping for anyone else. She always comes running into my room to find me. I know I have to get up early for school, but not THAT early! If it's still dark out, I'd rather be sleeping-
Day 80
January 12, 2009
Dear Diary, Today we got our Book It certificate for last month's reading log. Dad said we can go get my free personal pizza tonight for dinner. Yeah! No skiing today anyway since I was there pretty much all weekend. Haley and I went with her dad. It was a lot of fun!
Day 79
January 9, 2009
Dear Diary, My math homework last night was so hard that my mom had to use the internet so she could learn how to help me do it. I just didn't understand what we learned in class. It was like I totally forgot how to do it and had no idea! Algebra story problems can be tough!
Day 78
January 3, 2009
Dear Diary, Good news! My chicken pox are all gone, and now you can't even tell I had them. I'm so relieved because I so did not want to go back to school with them. Now my parents are just worried that my little sister Lilly might come down with them. Hopefully not, but we'll have to wait and see.
Day 77
December 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I am so glad that we're not in school right now, although I wouldn't be allowed in school with chickenpox anyway! The spots are finally starting to dry out, and I guess that means I'll be okay soon, but they look really nasty to me. I just hope that by the time school starts I'll look like me again.
Day 76
December 25, 2008
Dear Diary, I have the chicken pox! I cannot believe it since my mom says I was vaccinated for it when I was little. At first we didn't know what it was, but the doctor says for sure it is. I have these itchy red things all over my stomach and legs. Oh, and I have a little bit of a fever too. And it looks like even my mom may be getting it too, so the doctor put us both on antibiotics!
Day 75
December 22, 2008
Dear Diary, No school means more time for skiing! The only thing is that ski season is also when our bed and breakfast is the busiest. Usually Haley's dad and my dad take turns taking us on the slopes. That way my mom can stay with Lilly at the B&B. There's so much snow, it's absolutely beautiful, especially the trees all covered in white.
Day 74
December 16, 2008
Dear Diary, One thing about skiing is that it's exhausting! I love, love, love to ski, but by the end of the day, I end up going to bed so early, usually when Lilly does! I can't wait to go again Friday. We've had 15 inches of snow in the last 48 hours! I hope Haley comes with us.
Day 73
December 7, 2008
Dear Diary, The best part about being a local is that you don't have to wait in line for rental equipment, and you just walk by and show them your lift pass. The lifts that were open were pretty good. Still a little wet, but it's early. It felt awesome to be back sking again! Next time I'm gonna ask Haley if she wants to come with us. We're there like every weekend during ski season.
Day 72
December 3, 2008
Dear Diary, Yeah the snow is here! Dad says we can head over to the slopes at Vail this weekend. They've had almost a foot of snow the last couple of days. Some of the lifts are open, so I'm hoping to have my first ski of the season! I wish Saturday would hurry up!
Day 71
November 16, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight we made this delicious Italian sausage soup for dinner. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it really was good. Even the couple staying at our bed and breakfast had some and said it was unbelievable. My mom is such a good cook, she could open a restaurant someday if she ever gets tired of the bed and breakfast. You never know.
Day 70
November 14, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly is so funny. My sister has learned to say "no" and shake her head from side to side. It doesn't matter what you ask her, the answer is always "no". So Mom and I were asking her, "Lilly, do you want icecream?", "Lilly, do you want a pony?". And every answer was "no". It's actually kind of cute, until you want her to stop crying or drawing with crayons on the wall, and she says "no".
Day 69
November 13, 2008
Dear Diary, There's this new super cool store that just opened. It's all girl clothes and stuffed animals, and I love it! We went to check it out last night and the colors of everything are pinks and light blues, all pastels, my favorite! They were having a big opening sale, so Mom let me pick out a few super adorable sweaters and jeans. I can't wait to go back there again.
Day 68
November 9, 2008
Dear Diary, The couple that came to stay with us this weekend is from Florida, and they can't beleive how cold it is here in Colorado. It's cold, but it's still not as cold as it will be pretty soon. There hasn't been any snow yet, but they think it might tomorrow. I hope it snows and snows and snows so that I can start skiing soon!
Day 67
November 6, 2008
Dear Diary, This weekend we have our first set of visitors staying at our bed and breakfast. I always love to meet the different people and talk to them about where they're from. Someday I want to visit lots of places around the world. There are so many beautiful things to see.
Day 66
November 4, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley came over after school and we practiced our dancing. I love this one song we keep hearing on the radio. I don't know who sings it, but we started dancing as soon as it came on. I wish I could take some dance classes. I used to, but then Mom said I was too busy with skiing and everything else.
Day 65
October 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Alright, Dad finally gave in and said we can go this weekend. AND, he said that Haley can come too, as long as her dad comes with us! I think my dad just likes hanging out with Haley's dad Mr. Joe. We're not going on a long trail ride with the picnic and everything, just a couple of hours.
Day 64
October 28, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been begging my dad to take me horseback riding again at Beaver Creek. He just keeps saying "we'll see". It was so much fun when we went over the summer, but I really want to go again. And it would be even better if Haley could come with us too. I know Mom won't go because Lilly isn't old enough to ride yet, and she has to stay home with her. Maybe this weekend...
Day 63
October 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, I got a 'B-' on my spelling test. The four words I missed I'm positive I know how to spell. I told Mom I was frustrated I didn't do better. She said maybe I just panicked, and that I need to calm down and relax when I feel anxious about a test. And she said, "Don't be so hard on yourself. A 'B' is not bad." Thanks Mom!
Day 62
October 20, 2008
Dear Diary, It happened again! Today was my spelling test and my mind went totally blank when the teacher started calling out the words, just like in drama camp when I forgot my lines! I know that I know the words. I studied this weekend, and my dad even quizzed me on them last night. I just hope I remembered enough of them to get a good grade. I'll find out tomorrow.
Day 61
October 18, 2008
Dear Diary, My teacher gave us so much homework this weekend. Not that I had anything exciting planned, but homework? I have to study for my spelling test, do math and read a chapter in my science book. Oh yeah, and I need to do a current event. That's usually the easiest part of my homework. Guess I better get started.
Day 60
October 15, 2008
Dear Diary, Right now I'm sitting outside on our porch. I never get tired of seeing all the beautiful mountains. I know other states have beaches, but not here. I've actually never seen the ocean. I'll bet it's pretty there too. But of course there's no snow, so that would be bad for skiing!
Day 59
October 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom and I baked these delicious raspberry and white chocolate bars for dessert. Mom's trying to get ahead with baking and cooking to fill up the freezer since our bed and breakfast is now officially open for season. I wonder how soon we'll starts seeing visitors? Mom said people are starting to make their reservations for ski season.
Day 58
October 7, 2008
Dear Diary, I realized that someone could actually cheat in the reading program we're doing for school. We each keep track of our own reading time and fill out a log every day for our minutes. Our parents just have to sign at the end of the month. When I said something to the teacher about it, she said that she trusts us to be honest. I would feel bad if I lied about how much I read each night.
Day 57
October 6, 2008
Dear Diary, My school is doing the "Book It!" reading program where you can earn pizza for reading each month. I like pizza, so this works good for me. Doesn't everybody like pizza? I just have to read at least 20 minutes each night. I can do that, I usually do it anyway.
Day 56
October 2, 2008
Dear Diary, I have way too much homework to do tonight. I already did 2 math worksheets and studied my vocabulary words, and I'm still not done! But I had to take a break. I always have to do my homework up in my room. Otherwise my little sister Lilly grabs my papers and books and runs around with them.
Day 55
September 30, 2008
Dear Diary, I love this weather! It's starting to get cool outside, especially at night. It makes me want to be outside all the time. Maybe it'll get cold enough that it will snow early. I would love for the ski season to start early! It feels like it's taking forever to get here.
Day 54
September 27, 2008
Dear Diary, It's almost lunchtime, and I'm still in my pajamas. I love loafing around on the weekend. Mom says I can stay in my pajamas as long as no company comes over. Sweet! Mom and I are making some Italian Tortellini Soup later on, she said she needs my help getting everything measured. Other than that, I plan on just hanging out today.
Day 53
September 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly and I played outside today after school. I would hide behind trees and she would have to find me. Lilly just loves being outside, no matter what we do out there. When it's finally time to go back in, she cries and cries because she wants to stay out there. I have a hard time telling her no sometimes because she looks so sad when she doesn't get her way.
Day 52
September 21, 2008
Dear Diary, It seems like forever ago that Haley and I were in acting camp. It was only last month. I wish they had drama camps like that during the school year too. Although, once ski season starts I probably wouldn't have the time. Only two more months till I can hit the slopes! Which reminds me, I wonder if my parents have already bought our ski passes?
Day 51
September 17, 2008
Dear Diary, Usually I'm very good about bringing my homework to school, but today for some reason, I forgot. It was right where I left it, on the kitchen counter. And the teacher gives extra credit if you have your homework in on time all week. What a stinker. At least I can still turn it in and get partial credit, that's better than nothing.
Day 50
September 14, 2008
Dear Diary, This weekend went by way to fast. Tomorrow is already Monday again. We didn't really do anything very exciting, just kind of stayed around the house. But sometimes it's nice to not have to go running around all weekend having tons of things planned. We baked chocolate chip cookies this afternoon. Lilly kept saying "more, more"!
Day 49
September 12, 2008
Dear Diary, It's Friday! Haley invited me over to spend the night tonight, which I'm very excited about. She wants to show me her new ski suit, it's bright purple. Haley always has everything purple. Not me, my snow suit is hot pink. Better go pack my bag-
Day 48
September 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Recently, my sister Lilly decided that she likes me to brush her hair. I'm not sure if she likes the way it feels, or just that it makes her feel like a big girl. She's so cute though. When she sees me in the bathroom in the morning getting ready for school, she brings me her hairbrush and says "Brush Lilly". But what it really sounds like is"Bwuush Leelee"!
Day 47
September 7, 2008
Dear Diary, Now that it's September, we should start getting people in at our bed and breakfast soon. I don't mind. It's kind of fun having different people stay with us and hear them talk about where they're from. Usually their really nice. It makes me feel like our family is really big when we all sit down to have breakfast.
Day 46
September 2, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly has been miserable since the dentist said no more pacifier. I think Mom and Dad have been a little miserable too. I guess she has been up crying a lot at night. I don't hear it though since I'm lucky enough to have my room on the other side of the house. Oops! Mom is calling me for dinner-
Day 45
August 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Poor Lilly! She fell in the bathtub tonight and chipped one of her front teeth. She cried and cried while my dad was trying to look in her mouth to see how bad she was hurt. The doctor said she needs to see the dentist tomorrow first thing. She'll be okay, but the doctor said no more pacifier until Lilly sees the dentist. She's never slept without a pacifier before! It might be a long night for my parents. I'll be sleeping on the other side of the house.
Day 44
August 27, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so tired! I'm not used to being in school again yet. And it's rush, rush, rush to get home and do my homework. By the time I eat dinner it feels like it's time to get ready for bed and then start all over again! Then two days a week I have dance. I know I'll get used to it. I just hate how busy it is in the beginning of the school year.
Day 43
August 25, 2008
Dear Diary, This summer went by so fast! Tomorrow is really our first day of school? It doesn't seem possible. I haven't seen Haley in a while because her family has been away on vacation. I can't wait to see her in school tomorrow!
Day 42
August 21, 2008
Dear Diary, I feel really bad. I accidentally broke my mom's favorite coffee mug. I was helping wash the dishes and the mug slipped right out of my hand and broke in the sink. Mom wasn't mad or anything, but I still feel bad. She's had that mug for as long as I can remember. Maybe I can find her one just like it at the store. Hopefully.
Day 41
August 19, 2008
Dear Diary, Acting camp ended last Friday. Now I feel like I'm just waiting for school to start. We don't start until after Labor Day, so that's still a couple more weeks. And let's see, we're down to about three and a half months until ski season starts! That feels like forever, but I know it will go faster once school starts. I can't wait until my little sister Lilly is old enough to learn to ski. Not this year probably since she's still a toddler, but maybe next year. That will be so much fun!
Day 40
August 14, 2008
Dear Diary, You know, I never thought it could happen to me. I have no problem talking a lot. I have a pretty good memory. And I've been practicing my lines constantly. But today I totally froze on stage and forgot my lines. And it wasn't like I mixed up a few words or anything. I suddenly had no clue what I had been talking about and could not remember one word. The teacher said not to worry that it happens to everyone sooner or later. Really?
Day 39
August 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley and I rehearsed our lines this weekend. We were mostly at her house since she doesn't have a little sister that keeps interrupting. I think we're ready for filming tomorrow. I wonder if any of the other kids practiced their lines too. I want to make a good impression on the teachers.
Day 38
August 7, 2008
Dear Diary, Acting is really hard work! I'm so exhausted by the time I get home. It's a lot of fun, but I hardly sit down all day. We practice lines, film, and review the film to see how we're doing. Go, go, go!
Day 37
August 5, 2008
Dear Diary, Today was the second day of acting camp. So far we've been studying scenes and going over the basics. Tomorrow we start practicing filming. I think Haley and I are going to rehearse a lot over the weekend. Next week we film for real. It's very exciting being in front of the camera.
Day 36
August 2, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been looking all over for my sneakers. When I asked my mom she said she thought that pair was too small for me. She said she had sold them on the internet. Okay, I don't mind her selling my stuff when I'm done with it, but those were my favorite sneakers, and they still fit! So now she promised to check with me first before she snags anything else from my room.
Day 35
July 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Next week acting camp starts. I think it will be fun, especially since Haley is going too. I wonder what we're going to learn. It would be cool if we could do something that had some dancing or singing in it too. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Dad says he's not sure why I need drama camp since I'm already a "drama queen". I think he was just teasing!
Day 34
July 27, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so glad our computer is working again. I haven't been able to use it because it had some virus or something. I guess computers can get sick too. Anyways, Dad had to erase the whole harddrive and start all over. What a pain.
Day 33
July 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom said she felt bad about snapping at me. She said sometimes she just feels like she has no time to herself without Lilly and me following her from room to room talking to her constantly. So now she said that when the bathroom door is closed we have a new rule. The rule is no knocking or interrupting her unless someone is in danger or it is an emergency. I told her I'd try, but I'm not sure Lilly can follow that rule.
Day 32
July 18, 2008
Dear Diary, I think Mom needs a break or something. I went to ask her a question while she was in the tub and she yelled at me to get out. Something about how she needed some "personal space". I can't help it. Sometimes I think of things I need to ask her. And sometimes she just so happens to be in the tub or making dinner, or whatever.
Day 31
July 16, 2008
Dear Diary, I love the middle of the day now. My little sister Lilly takes a three hour nap right after lunch! I love to play with my sister, but it's nice to get a break when she's napping. Then I can use the computer or read or dance without her constantly pulling at me. I can't believe how quiet it is in here right now.
Day 30
July 14, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley was at a dance camp last week while I was at the theater workshop. She's going to come over this afternoon and show me the new routines she learned. That should be fun. I always like learning new dance moves. Maybe we can do a show for Lilly and Mom after we practice.
Day 29
July 11, 2008
Dear Diary, Theater workshop is over. Yesterday was our big performance, and we nailed it! I'm sad to see it end, but I know I will see some of the same kids in drama camp in August. For now it's back to keeping Lilly busy and helping Mom with cleaning the bed and breakfast.
Day 28
July 8, 2008
Dear Diary, Today was my second day of the children's theater workshop. I really like it. Creating the stories is kind of tough, but I love getting up on the stage and acting it out. This week is going by so fast. Four days just doesn't seem long enough. But on the last day we give a public performance with the rest of the theater company. How exciting!
Day 27
July 5, 2008
Dear Diary, Last night we did our own sparklers at home. Mom and Dad figured that the loud fireworks might scare Lilly if we went to the show. She loved the sparklers though. I danced all around the front yard, twirling the sparklers around, like I was a baton twirler or something. Lilly would laugh and clap her hands with a big smile on her face. Sometimes it's fun being the big sister.
Day 26
July 3, 2008
Dear Diary, I think I hurt my back last night. I was doing some stretching after dancing. And when I leaned over to stretch out my back, I heard this popping sound. Now this morning, my back is killing me. Mom says just put a heating pad on it for a little while, and it'll be fine. So here I sit. Can't do very much. The electric cord for the heating pad will only reach so far. How boring.
Day 25
June 30, 2008
Dear Diary, My mom cracks me up sometimes. Since we're off season at our bed and breakfast she has more time to do other things. Well, lately she's on the computer a lot. She's using some website to buy and sell a bunch of stuff. She walks all through our house looking for toys, clothes, whatever that we're not using anymore to sell. Dad jokes that we better hide the china. I'm thinking about hiding my ski equipment so she doesn't get any ideas to sell it!
Day 24
June 28, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley is coming over today. She loves to play with my sister Lilly when she's here. I don't mind usually, as long as we get some time to dance and listen to music. Mom and I baked these awesome blueberry muffins for when Haley comes over. I had to try one when they first came out of the oven. I hope Haley likes them too, or else that's more for me!
Day 23
June 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, it's almost July, finally. That means only about 6 more months till ski season starts! That sounds so far away. It all depends on when the snow starts. Last year it started snowing early, so we were skiing in November. I'm hoping it will be early this year too!
Day 22
June 20, 2008
Dear Diary, Happy, happy, happy!!! When I woke up this morning there was a brochure sitting on the kitchen table. I didn't really look at it, but Dad handed it to me. Then I realized it was for the Beaver Creek Children's Theatre Workshops. In July they have a four day workshop. Dad said I get to go! I was so surprised since I'm already going to an acting camp in August. But Mom said that's still okay too.
Day 21
June 19, 2008
Dear Diary, One bad thing about summer is the cleaning. Our family's bed and breakfast is pretty empty in the summertime. That's when my mom and dad like to do what they call a "German cleaning". That means I have to help too. I wish Lilly was old enough to help too. I usually do all the dusting. Mom says this year she'll pay me extra allowance for helping. That's cool at least.
Day 20
June 17, 2008
Dear Diary, My friend Haley is coming over today. We're going to use one of the empty rooms to practice our dance we've been working on. We choreographed the moves to a couple of our favorite songs. When we're all done, we want to perform in front of our families. We have a lot of work to do first though. That's okay though, it's fun dancing with Haley. She always makes me laugh!
Day 19
June 12, 2008
Dear Diary, What is separation anxiety anyway? My little sister Lilly has been a terror today, crying antime my mom put her down. And now that it's her bedtime, she's standing in her crib screaming because she wants Mom again. Dad says it's just a phase, and to try using my mp3 player so I don't hear all her fussing.
Day 18
June 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Beaver Creek was awesome! We had so much fun horseback riding on the trail through the mountains. My horse's name was Tex. At first I was a little scared because he seemed so big when I got up close to him. But once Tex and I were riding, I was fine. The picnic lunch was okay. My sandwich was smashed by the time I ate it, and so was my banana. Oh well, at least the riding was fun.
Day 17
June 4, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so happy! My dad is taking me horseback riding at Beaver Creek this weekend. I can't believe I have to wait 3 more days! We're going on a three hour trail ride and will even stop for a picnic. I hope I get to ride a really big horse, and not just a pony. Ponies are for little kids.
Day16
June 2, 2008
Dear Diary, Okay I know I said I love my baby sister. But the last couple days all she does is cry. Dad says she's cutting teeth, and that's why she's crying so much. I feel bad for her, but she just crawls around going "Mama,Mama" while she's crying. Last night I even woke up in the middle of the night because she was crying in her crib. Mom says hopefully not much longer and her teeth will come in. Then they won't hurt so much. I hope so.
Day 15
May 30, 2008
Dear Diary, My little sister Lilly is learning to walk. Now she always wants someone to hold her hands so she can walk across the room. Usually that person is me! She gets so excited that she squeals really loud. Sometimes I miss her being just a little baby. That way I could hold her. Now if I try to hold her she just wiggles away from me. She really is a lot of fun though.
Day 14
May 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I love acting. I want to go to a drama summer camp. Dad says it's up to Mom. And Mom says it's up to Dad. It's only a few weeks long. Then at the end of camp, there's a big production the kids do for the parents. But that's not until August, so I have to wait all summer for it. Summer always takes so long. Just like waiting for the snow.
Day 13
May 26, 2008
Dear Diary, We had so much fun at the picnic yesterday! The kids played games while the adults talked. My favorite game was the relay race. At one end were the empty milk jugs, then on the other end were big buckets of water with sponges. You had to take turns running back and forth with just a sponge trying to fill up the water jug with water. My team won! Then I ate so much food I had a tummy ache. My pigs in blankets were delicious!
Day 12
May 24, 2008
Dear Diary, Today we're cleaning up the yard and getting ready for the big picnic tomorrow. I'm in charge of washing the tables and chairs. So boring, but mom says we've got to get it done. Wouldn't it be nice to have a magic fairy who could do all my chores for me? Oh well, better get to work. The fun part will be making my pigs in blankets. But that's not until tomorrow.
Day 11
May 21, 2008
Dear Diary, I should have stayed in bed today. I was late for school. Forgot my homework on the kitchen table. And they had mystery meat for lunch today at school, yuck! Then my bike had a flat tire, so my mom had to pick me up from school. Mom says some days are stinkers, but that tomorrow is a new day. I think I'll pack my lunch for school tomorrow just in case it's another mystery meat.
Day 10
May 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I can't wait for next weekend! It's Memorial Day. We're having a big picnic at my house with some friends and family. My mom makes the best brownies, and I love them! This year mom said I can help by making my own dish for the picnic. I think I might make pigs in blankets. That's when you take mini hotdogs and wrap them in dough before cooking them.
Day 9
May 17, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, yesterday was my big day as Betsy Ross. When the parents asked the questions I knew most of the answers. I remembered that she sewed the first American Flag in 1776 and that it had 13 stripes. My mom had made a flag for me to carry. The only bad part was that when I was walking across the stage, I tripped! Not bad enough to fall, but it was still a little embarassing. I'm not used to such a long skirt and dress shoes!
Day 8
May 14, 2008
Dear Diary, My family's bed and breakfast is not as busy in the summer time. There are not as many visitors when there is no snow. I like helping out with the guests, but when they're not here I love seeing more of my mom and dad. They have more time for me and my little sister.
Day 7
May 11, 2008
Dear Diary, Now that summer is here I have to wait to ski. No snow for months. At least we can still ride on the gondola. That's the ski lift that takes you to the top of the mountain. My favorite one is at Lionshead. It's so pretty.
Day 6
May 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, the famous person I wanted to be was already taken, so I get to be Betsy Ross. She made the first American flag. My mom says she'll help me make one for the assembly. It's next Friday. I have a lot of work to do to get ready.
Day 5
April 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I think the teachers have decided that since spring is coming, they better start piling on the homework to get us ready for the next grade. I have to do this crazy report in social studies where I have to pretend to be a famous person from history and answer a bunch of questions about her. Then, in a couple weeks, we are having a special day at school where everyone has to dress up like their character and pretend to be them during a special assembly. All the parents will come and ask us questions about our character and we have to know all the answers. I wonder who I will be…
Day 4
April 16, 2008
Dear Diary, The guests loved my mom’s dinner last night. It turned out to be something called beef stroganoff but it was really just meat with a bunch of vegetables and stuff. The best part was the dessert. She made chocolate souflees for everyone in their own little pot with powdered sugar on top. I was in charge of sifting the sugar on top when it was time. Now that was fun!
Day 3
April 13, 2008
Dear Diary, I have so much homework today that I don’t think I will even have time to get on the slopes at all today. Besides, my mom says I have to help here in the kitchen tonight preparing the dinner because it is sort of complicated and she needs help. I don’t mind helping in the kitchen sometimes, and I can tell when my mom is stressed! She likes to say “overwhelmed”, but I think she looks a little crazy to me.
Day 2
April 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Since I live in a tourist area, I get to meet lots of interesting people from all over the world. They mostly come here to vacation and ski. There are a lot of different places to ski around here, and I have been to just about every place. My favorite place to go is Beaver Creek Mountain. I know a lot of people there and it is pretty close to my house. Also, a bunch of local people like to ski there, so I see a lot of the same faces.Day 1
April 7, 2008
Dear Diary, I am in heaven. Even though it is April, we still have plenty of snow on the ground to ski. I have been on the slopes almost every day. I am really lucky because my family owns a little bed and breakfast in Vail. It is kind of like a hotel, but not as big and fancy. There are only 6 rooms and my mom cooks everyone breakfast and dinner. We live there too, but in the back where the guests don’t really go.
