Kara Vail's Diary
Day 71
November 16, 2008
Dear Diary, Tonight we made this delicious Italian sausage soup for dinner. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it really was good. Even the couple staying at our bed and breakfast had some and said it was unbelievable. My mom is such a good cook, she could open a restaurant someday if she ever gets tired of the bed and breakfast. You never know.
Day 70
November 14, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly is so funny. My sister has learned to say "no" and shake her head from side to side. It doesn't matter what you ask her, the answer is always "no". So Mom and I were asking her, "Lilly, do you want icecream?", "Lilly, do you want a pony?". And every answer was "no". It's actually kind of cute, until you want her to stop crying or drawing with crayons on the wall, and she says "no".
Day 69
November 13, 2008
Dear Diary, There's this new super cool store that just opened. It's all girl clothes and stuffed animals, and I love it! We went to check it out last night and the colors of everything are pinks and light blues, all pastels, my favorite! They were having a big opening sale, so Mom let me pick out a few super adorable sweaters and jeans. I can't wait to go back there again.
Day 68
November 9, 2008
Dear Diary, The couple that came to stay with us this weekend is from Florida, and they can't beleive how cold it is here in Colorado. It's cold, but it's still not as cold as it will be pretty soon. There hasn't been any snow yet, but they think it might tomorrow. I hope it snows and snows and snows so that I can start skiing soon!
Day 67
November 6, 2008
Dear Diary, This weekend we have our first set of visitors staying at our bed and breakfast. I always love to meet the different people and talk to them about where they're from. Someday I want to visit lots of places around the world. There are so many beautiful things to see.
Day 66
November 4, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley came over after school and we practiced our dancing. I love this one song we keep hearing on the radio. I don't know who sings it, but we started dancing as soon as it came on. I wish I could take some dance classes. I used to, but then Mom said I was too busy with skiing and everything else.
Day 65
October 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Alright, Dad finally gave in and said we can go this weekend. AND, he said that Haley can come too, as long as her dad comes with us! I think my dad just likes hanging out with Haley's dad Mr. Joe. We're not going on a long trail ride with the picnic and everything, just a couple of hours.
Day 64
October 28, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been begging my dad to take me horseback riding again at Beaver Creek. He just keeps saying "we'll see". It was so much fun when we went over the summer, but I really want to go again. And it would be even better if Haley could come with us too. I know Mom won't go because Lilly isn't old enough to ride yet, and she has to stay home with her. Maybe this weekend...
Day 63
October 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, I got a 'B-' on my spelling test. The four words I missed I'm positive I know how to spell. I told Mom I was frustrated I didn't do better. She said maybe I just panicked, and that I need to calm down and relax when I feel anxious about a test. And she said, "Don't be so hard on yourself. A 'B' is not bad." Thanks Mom!
Day 62
October 20, 2008
Dear Diary, It happened again! Today was my spelling test and my mind went totally blank when the teacher started calling out the words, just like in drama camp when I forgot my lines! I know that I know the words. I studied this weekend, and my dad even quizzed me on them last night. I just hope I remembered enough of them to get a good grade. I'll find out tomorrow.
Day 61
October 18, 2008
Dear Diary, My teacher gave us so much homework this weekend. Not that I had anything exciting planned, but homework? I have to study for my spelling test, do math and read a chapter in my science book. Oh yeah, and I need to do a current event. That's usually the easiest part of my homework. Guess I better get started.
Day 60
October 15, 2008
Dear Diary, Right now I'm sitting outside on our porch. I never get tired of seeing all the beautiful mountains. I know other states have beaches, but not here. I've actually never seen the ocean. I'll bet it's pretty there too. But of course there's no snow, so that would be bad for skiing!
Day 59
October 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom and I baked these delicious raspberry and white chocolate bars for dessert. Mom's trying to get ahead with baking and cooking to fill up the freezer since our bed and breakfast is now officially open for season. I wonder how soon we'll starts seeing visitors? Mom said people are starting to make their reservations for ski season.
Day 58
October 7, 2008
Dear Diary, I realized that someone could actually cheat in the reading program we're doing for school. We each keep track of our own reading time and fill out a log every day for our minutes. Our parents just have to sign at the end of the month. When I said something to the teacher about it, she said that she trusts us to be honest. I would feel bad if I lied about how much I read each night.
Day 57
October 6, 2008
Dear Diary, My school is doing the "Book It!" reading program where you can earn pizza for reading each month. I like pizza, so this works good for me. Doesn't everybody like pizza? I just have to read at least 20 minutes each night. I can do that, I usually do it anyway.
Day 56
October 2, 2008
Dear Diary, I have way too much homework to do tonight. I already did 2 math worksheets and studied my vocabulary words, and I'm still not done! But I had to take a break. I always have to do my homework up in my room. Otherwise my little sister Lilly grabs my papers and books and runs around with them.
Day 55
September 30, 2008
Dear Diary, I love this weather! It's starting to get cool outside, especially at night. It makes me want to be outside all the time. Maybe it'll get cold enough that it will snow early. I would love for the ski season to start early! It feels like it's taking forever to get here.
Day 54
September 27, 2008
Dear Diary, It's almost lunchtime, and I'm still in my pajamas. I love loafing around on the weekend. Mom says I can stay in my pajamas as long as no company comes over. Sweet! Mom and I are making some Italian Tortellini Soup later on, she said she needs my help getting everything measured. Other than that, I plan on just hanging out today.
Day 53
September 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly and I played outside today after school. I would hide behind trees and she would have to find me. Lilly just loves being outside, no matter what we do out there. When it's finally time to go back in, she cries and cries because she wants to stay out there. I have a hard time telling her no sometimes because she looks so sad when she doesn't get her way.
Day 52
September 21, 2008
Dear Diary, It seems like forever ago that Haley and I were in acting camp. It was only last month. I wish they had drama camps like that during the school year too. Although, once ski season starts I probably wouldn't have the time. Only two more months till I can hit the slopes! Which reminds me, I wonder if my parents have already bought our ski passes?
Day 51
September 17, 2008
Dear Diary, Usually I'm very good about bringing my homework to school, but today for some reason, I forgot. It was right where I left it, on the kitchen counter. And the teacher gives extra credit if you have your homework in on time all week. What a stinker. At least I can still turn it in and get partial credit, that's better than nothing.
Day 50
September 14, 2008
Dear Diary, This weekend went by way to fast. Tomorrow is already Monday again. We didn't really do anything very exciting, just kind of stayed around the house. But sometimes it's nice to not have to go running around all weekend having tons of things planned. We baked chocolate chip cookies this afternoon. Lilly kept saying "more, more"!
Day 49
September 12, 2008
Dear Diary, It's Friday! Haley invited me over to spend the night tonight, which I'm very excited about. She wants to show me her new ski suit, it's bright purple. Haley always has everything purple. Not me, my snow suit is hot pink. Better go pack my bag-
Day 48
September 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Recently, my sister Lilly decided that she likes me to brush her hair. I'm not sure if she likes the way it feels, or just that it makes her feel like a big girl. She's so cute though. When she sees me in the bathroom in the morning getting ready for school, she brings me her hairbrush and says "Brush Lilly". But what it really sounds like is"Bwuush Leelee"!
Day 47
September 7, 2008
Dear Diary, Now that it's September, we should start getting people in at our bed and breakfast soon. I don't mind. It's kind of fun having different people stay with us and hear them talk about where they're from. Usually their really nice. It makes me feel like our family is really big when we all sit down to have breakfast.
Day 46
September 2, 2008
Dear Diary, Lilly has been miserable since the dentist said no more pacifier. I think Mom and Dad have been a little miserable too. I guess she has been up crying a lot at night. I don't hear it though since I'm lucky enough to have my room on the other side of the house. Oops! Mom is calling me for dinner-
Day 45
August 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Poor Lilly! She fell in the bathtub tonight and chipped one of her front teeth. She cried and cried while my dad was trying to look in her mouth to see how bad she was hurt. The doctor said she needs to see the dentist tomorrow first thing. She'll be okay, but the doctor said no more pacifier until Lilly sees the dentist. She's never slept without a pacifier before! It might be a long night for my parents. I'll be sleeping on the other side of the house.
Day 44
August 27, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so tired! I'm not used to being in school again yet. And it's rush, rush, rush to get home and do my homework. By the time I eat dinner it feels like it's time to get ready for bed and then start all over again! Then two days a week I have dance. I know I'll get used to it. I just hate how busy it is in the beginning of the school year.
Day 43
August 25, 2008
Dear Diary, This summer went by so fast! Tomorrow is really our first day of school? It doesn't seem possible. I haven't seen Haley in a while because her family has been away on vacation. I can't wait to see her in school tomorrow!
Day 42
August 21, 2008
Dear Diary, I feel really bad. I accidentally broke my mom's favorite coffee mug. I was helping wash the dishes and the mug slipped right out of my hand and broke in the sink. Mom wasn't mad or anything, but I still feel bad. She's had that mug for as long as I can remember. Maybe I can find her one just like it at the store. Hopefully.
Day 41
August 19, 2008
Dear Diary, Acting camp ended last Friday. Now I feel like I'm just waiting for school to start. We don't start until after Labor Day, so that's still a couple more weeks. And let's see, we're down to about three and a half months until ski season starts! That feels like forever, but I know it will go faster once school starts. I can't wait until my little sister Lilly is old enough to learn to ski. Not this year probably since she's still a toddler, but maybe next year. That will be so much fun!
Day 40
August 14, 2008
Dear Diary, You know, I never thought it could happen to me. I have no problem talking a lot. I have a pretty good memory. And I've been practicing my lines constantly. But today I totally froze on stage and forgot my lines. And it wasn't like I mixed up a few words or anything. I suddenly had no clue what I had been talking about and could not remember one word. The teacher said not to worry that it happens to everyone sooner or later. Really?
Day 39
August 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley and I rehearsed our lines this weekend. We were mostly at her house since she doesn't have a little sister that keeps interrupting. I think we're ready for filming tomorrow. I wonder if any of the other kids practiced their lines too. I want to make a good impression on the teachers.
Day 38
August 7, 2008
Dear Diary, Acting is really hard work! I'm so exhausted by the time I get home. It's a lot of fun, but I hardly sit down all day. We practice lines, film, and review the film to see how we're doing. Go, go, go!
Day 37
August 5, 2008
Dear Diary, Today was the second day of acting camp. So far we've been studying scenes and going over the basics. Tomorrow we start practicing filming. I think Haley and I are going to rehearse a lot over the weekend. Next week we film for real. It's very exciting being in front of the camera.
Day 36
August 2, 2008
Dear Diary, I've been looking all over for my sneakers. When I asked my mom she said she thought that pair was too small for me. She said she had sold them on the internet. Okay, I don't mind her selling my stuff when I'm done with it, but those were my favorite sneakers, and they still fit! So now she promised to check with me first before she snags anything else from my room.
Day 35
July 30, 2008
Dear Diary, Next week acting camp starts. I think it will be fun, especially since Haley is going too. I wonder what we're going to learn. It would be cool if we could do something that had some dancing or singing in it too. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Dad says he's not sure why I need drama camp since I'm already a "drama queen". I think he was just teasing!
Day 34
July 27, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so glad our computer is working again. I haven't been able to use it because it had some virus or something. I guess computers can get sick too. Anyways, Dad had to erase the whole harddrive and start all over. What a pain.
Day 33
July 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Mom said she felt bad about snapping at me. She said sometimes she just feels like she has no time to herself without Lilly and me following her from room to room talking to her constantly. So now she said that when the bathroom door is closed we have a new rule. The rule is no knocking or interrupting her unless someone is in danger or it is an emergency. I told her I'd try, but I'm not sure Lilly can follow that rule.
Day 32
July 18, 2008
Dear Diary, I think Mom needs a break or something. I went to ask her a question while she was in the tub and she yelled at me to get out. Something about how she needed some "personal space". I can't help it. Sometimes I think of things I need to ask her. And sometimes she just so happens to be in the tub or making dinner, or whatever.
Day 31
July 16, 2008
Dear Diary, I love the middle of the day now. My little sister Lilly takes a three hour nap right after lunch! I love to play with my sister, but it's nice to get a break when she's napping. Then I can use the computer or read or dance without her constantly pulling at me. I can't believe how quiet it is in here right now.
Day 30
July 14, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley was at a dance camp last week while I was at the theater workshop. She's going to come over this afternoon and show me the new routines she learned. That should be fun. I always like learning new dance moves. Maybe we can do a show for Lilly and Mom after we practice.
Day 29
July 11, 2008
Dear Diary, Theater workshop is over. Yesterday was our big performance, and we nailed it! I'm sad to see it end, but I know I will see some of the same kids in drama camp in August. For now it's back to keeping Lilly busy and helping Mom with cleaning the bed and breakfast.
Day 28
July 8, 2008
Dear Diary, Today was my second day of the children's theater workshop. I really like it. Creating the stories is kind of tough, but I love getting up on the stage and acting it out. This week is going by so fast. Four days just doesn't seem long enough. But on the last day we give a public performance with the rest of the theater company. How exciting!
Day 27
July 5, 2008
Dear Diary, Last night we did our own sparklers at home. Mom and Dad figured that the loud fireworks might scare Lilly if we went to the show. She loved the sparklers though. I danced all around the front yard, twirling the sparklers around, like I was a baton twirler or something. Lilly would laugh and clap her hands with a big smile on her face. Sometimes it's fun being the big sister.
Day 26
July 3, 2008
Dear Diary, I think I hurt my back last night. I was doing some stretching after dancing. And when I leaned over to stretch out my back, I heard this popping sound. Now this morning, my back is killing me. Mom says just put a heating pad on it for a little while, and it'll be fine. So here I sit. Can't do very much. The electric cord for the heating pad will only reach so far. How boring.
Day 25
June 30, 2008
Dear Diary, My mom cracks me up sometimes. Since we're off season at our bed and breakfast she has more time to do other things. Well, lately she's on the computer a lot. She's using some website to buy and sell a bunch of stuff. She walks all through our house looking for toys, clothes, whatever that we're not using anymore to sell. Dad jokes that we better hide the china. I'm thinking about hiding my ski equipment so she doesn't get any ideas to sell it!
Day 24
June 28, 2008
Dear Diary, Haley is coming over today. She loves to play with my sister Lilly when she's here. I don't mind usually, as long as we get some time to dance and listen to music. Mom and I baked these awesome blueberry muffins for when Haley comes over. I had to try one when they first came out of the oven. I hope Haley likes them too, or else that's more for me!
Day 23
June 23, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, it's almost July, finally. That means only about 6 more months till ski season starts! That sounds so far away. It all depends on when the snow starts. Last year it started snowing early, so we were skiing in November. I'm hoping it will be early this year too!
Day 22
June 20, 2008
Dear Diary, Happy, happy, happy!!! When I woke up this morning there was a brochure sitting on the kitchen table. I didn't really look at it, but Dad handed it to me. Then I realized it was for the Beaver Creek Children's Theatre Workshops. In July they have a four day workshop. Dad said I get to go! I was so surprised since I'm already going to an acting camp in August. But Mom said that's still okay too.
Day 21
June 19, 2008
Dear Diary, One bad thing about summer is the cleaning. Our family's bed and breakfast is pretty empty in the summertime. That's when my mom and dad like to do what they call a "German cleaning". That means I have to help too. I wish Lilly was old enough to help too. I usually do all the dusting. Mom says this year she'll pay me extra allowance for helping. That's cool at least.
Day 20
June 17, 2008
Dear Diary, My friend Haley is coming over today. We're going to use one of the empty rooms to practice our dance we've been working on. We choreographed the moves to a couple of our favorite songs. When we're all done, we want to perform in front of our families. We have a lot of work to do first though. That's okay though, it's fun dancing with Haley. She always makes me laugh!
Day 19
June 12, 2008
Dear Diary, What is separation anxiety anyway? My little sister Lilly has been a terror today, crying antime my mom put her down. And now that it's her bedtime, she's standing in her crib screaming because she wants Mom again. Dad says it's just a phase, and to try using my mp3 player so I don't hear all her fussing.
Day 18
June 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Beaver Creek was awesome! We had so much fun horseback riding on the trail through the mountains. My horse's name was Tex. At first I was a little scared because he seemed so big when I got up close to him. But once Tex and I were riding, I was fine. The picnic lunch was okay. My sandwich was smashed by the time I ate it, and so was my banana. Oh well, at least the riding was fun.
Day 17
June 4, 2008
Dear Diary, I'm so happy! My dad is taking me horseback riding at Beaver Creek this weekend. I can't believe I have to wait 3 more days! We're going on a three hour trail ride and will even stop for a picnic. I hope I get to ride a really big horse, and not just a pony. Ponies are for little kids.
Day16
June 2, 2008
Dear Diary, Okay I know I said I love my baby sister. But the last couple days all she does is cry. Dad says she's cutting teeth, and that's why she's crying so much. I feel bad for her, but she just crawls around going "Mama,Mama" while she's crying. Last night I even woke up in the middle of the night because she was crying in her crib. Mom says hopefully not much longer and her teeth will come in. Then they won't hurt so much. I hope so.
Day 15
May 30, 2008
Dear Diary, My little sister Lilly is learning to walk. Now she always wants someone to hold her hands so she can walk across the room. Usually that person is me! She gets so excited that she squeals really loud. Sometimes I miss her being just a little baby. That way I could hold her. Now if I try to hold her she just wiggles away from me. She really is a lot of fun though.
Day 14
May 29, 2008
Dear Diary, I love acting. I want to go to a drama summer camp. Dad says it's up to Mom. And Mom says it's up to Dad. It's only a few weeks long. Then at the end of camp, there's a big production the kids do for the parents. But that's not until August, so I have to wait all summer for it. Summer always takes so long. Just like waiting for the snow.
Day 13
May 26, 2008
Dear Diary, We had so much fun at the picnic yesterday! The kids played games while the adults talked. My favorite game was the relay race. At one end were the empty milk jugs, then on the other end were big buckets of water with sponges. You had to take turns running back and forth with just a sponge trying to fill up the water jug with water. My team won! Then I ate so much food I had a tummy ache. My pigs in blankets were delicious!
Day 12
May 24, 2008
Dear Diary, Today we're cleaning up the yard and getting ready for the big picnic tomorrow. I'm in charge of washing the tables and chairs. So boring, but mom says we've got to get it done. Wouldn't it be nice to have a magic fairy who could do all my chores for me? Oh well, better get to work. The fun part will be making my pigs in blankets. But that's not until tomorrow.
Day 11
May 21, 2008
Dear Diary, I should have stayed in bed today. I was late for school. Forgot my homework on the kitchen table. And they had mystery meat for lunch today at school, yuck! Then my bike had a flat tire, so my mom had to pick me up from school. Mom says some days are stinkers, but that tomorrow is a new day. I think I'll pack my lunch for school tomorrow just in case it's another mystery meat.
Day 10
May 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I can't wait for next weekend! It's Memorial Day. We're having a big picnic at my house with some friends and family. My mom makes the best brownies, and I love them! This year mom said I can help by making my own dish for the picnic. I think I might make pigs in blankets. That's when you take mini hotdogs and wrap them in dough before cooking them.
Day 9
May 17, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, yesterday was my big day as Betsy Ross. When the parents asked the questions I knew most of the answers. I remembered that she sewed the first American Flag in 1776 and that it had 13 stripes. My mom had made a flag for me to carry. The only bad part was that when I was walking across the stage, I tripped! Not bad enough to fall, but it was still a little embarassing. I'm not used to such a long skirt and dress shoes!
Day 8
May 14, 2008
Dear Diary, My family's bed and breakfast is not as busy in the summer time. There are not as many visitors when there is no snow. I like helping out with the guests, but when they're not here I love seeing more of my mom and dad. They have more time for me and my little sister.
Day 7
May 11, 2008
Dear Diary, Now that summer is here I have to wait to ski. No snow for months. At least we can still ride on the gondola. That's the ski lift that takes you to the top of the mountain. My favorite one is at Lionshead. It's so pretty.
Day 6
May 9, 2008
Dear Diary, Well, the famous person I wanted to be was already taken, so I get to be Betsy Ross. She made the first American flag. My mom says she'll help me make one for the assembly. It's next Friday. I have a lot of work to do to get ready.
Day 5
April 19, 2008
Dear Diary, I think the teachers have decided that since spring is coming, they better start piling on the homework to get us ready for the next grade. I have to do this crazy report in social studies where I have to pretend to be a famous person from history and answer a bunch of questions about her. Then, in a couple weeks, we are having a special day at school where everyone has to dress up like their character and pretend to be them during a special assembly. All the parents will come and ask us questions about our character and we have to know all the answers. I wonder who I will be…
Day 4
April 16, 2008
Dear Diary, The guests loved my mom’s dinner last night. It turned out to be something called beef stroganoff but it was really just meat with a bunch of vegetables and stuff. The best part was the dessert. She made chocolate souflees for everyone in their own little pot with powdered sugar on top. I was in charge of sifting the sugar on top when it was time. Now that was fun!
Day 3
April 13, 2008
Dear Diary, I have so much homework today that I don’t think I will even have time to get on the slopes at all today. Besides, my mom says I have to help here in the kitchen tonight preparing the dinner because it is sort of complicated and she needs help. I don’t mind helping in the kitchen sometimes, and I can tell when my mom is stressed! She likes to say “overwhelmed”, but I think she looks a little crazy to me.
Day 2
April 10, 2008
Dear Diary, Since I live in a tourist area, I get to meet lots of interesting people from all over the world. They mostly come here to vacation and ski. There are a lot of different places to ski around here, and I have been to just about every place. My favorite place to go is Beaver Creek Mountain. I know a lot of people there and it is pretty close to my house. Also, a bunch of local people like to ski there, so I see a lot of the same faces.Day 1
April 7, 2008
Dear Diary, I am in heaven. Even though it is April, we still have plenty of snow on the ground to ski. I have been on the slopes almost every day. I am really lucky because my family owns a little bed and breakfast in Vail. It is kind of like a hotel, but not as big and fancy. There are only 6 rooms and my mom cooks everyone breakfast and dinner. We live there too, but in the back where the guests don’t really go.
